The Central Labor Union here reported prog-j ress in its drive to raise funds I for the relief of families of AFL i trade unionists . who were killed ! or injured ir. the Texas City dis-1 aster of last April. Trt render emergency assistance | and to establish a trust fund for the nearly ltN) children of AFL members left fatherless .by the disaster, the Galveston Labor Council and the Building and Construction Trades Council set a goal of $200,000 for the accom plishment of this purpose. Commending the activities of the CLU, AFL President William Green issued an appeal to all AFL affiliates for voluntary contribu tions to the fund, lie declared the purpose of the drive deserves . co-operation and support' bf AFL members everywhere. He said: “The suffering of our fellow- j ers am! their families is a matter of deep interest and concern to all of us. We cannot begin to comprehend the tragic conse quences of the terrible Texas City disaster. Please contribute as lib erally as possible to the fund being raised by the. C.—The AFL’s Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters withstood successfully an attempt of the CIO to become bargaining representative for em ployes of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Co. The AFL union won art election conducted by the National Media tion Board and soundly trounced the rival CIO affiliate. The count of ballots gave the Sleeping Car Porters ,an 81 to 30 victory. Prior to the CIO’s attempt to “muscle in.” the AFL union acted as bargaining representative for the employes who participated in the election. AFL’s TEXTILE WORKERS'1 WHIP CIO IN ELECTION Elizabethton, Tenn.—The AFL’s United Textile Workers of Amer ica1 whipped the CIO in a collec tive bargaining election among employes at the plant of the North American Rayon Corpor ation here. In an election held by the Na tional Labor Relations Board the AFL union was the victor by a vote of 2,308 to 1,017. -Aiccept our hearty thanks for the pleasant‘business associations of the , past year.
