BIRTHDAY GREETINGS STANDARD ICE & FUEL COMPMY 700 West Ninth Street Phone 2-1114 i CIVILIAN JOBS SET RECORD; 61,296,000 NOW JIT WORK !■ I Washington.—The number of people employed in civilian jobs in June hit 61.296,000, over l.OOO, 000 above the levels for last year, and a new record-breaking figure in the nation’s employment his j tory, according to reports of the j Census Bureau. The continued business boom and the pressure of high living ■ j costs contributed to boost employ ment to the record totals. The | effect of rising prices may be j noted by the fact that the bu reau reported a rising proportion of women entering tne labor mar ket during 1948. ! The June figure on civilian employment reflected a startling one-month upswing of 2,636,000 jobs. With schools out, young sters swarmed into the labor I market. Most of them hit it just right. Farm employment neared its sum mer peak at 9,396,00 for June, and non farm employment hit an unprecedented 51,899,000 total. Some youngsters—chiefly teen agers, the bureau said—missed an immediate connection, with the result that unemployment went up along with employment. The rise was 423,000 and the total of jobless reached 2.184,000, highest since July last year. The backbone strength in la bor demand lay in the business boom. Some government experts ■ spoke of prospective labor short ages when the youngsters go back to school in the fall. The bureau’s figures on job holders included about 2,500,000 who weren’t actually at work be cause of vacations, illness, strikes, bad weather, and temporary lay offs. They covered everyone working ifor pay, hope of profit, or for , family benefit leaving out house wives. Total civilian employment in June cracked the previous record, set in July last year, by 1,217,000, and left the one-time goal of 60, 00,000 jobs far behind. While j unemployment also was up during June, it was 371,000 below a year ago. U. S. COST FOR WORLD CROUPS PUT AT OVER $163 MILLIONS ’ Washington—The United States contributed $103,504,788 to the United Nations and 45 other world groups to which it belongs during the fiscal year ending June | 1®A8, the Senate Committee on Executive Expenditures has an nounced.
