LABOR MOVEMENT Chicago- — The Taft-Hartley law has brought a “new look” to the style of labor-management relations which threatens to de stroy the basis of organized la bor in America. Joseph M. Ja cobs, labor attorney, charged in an address to the convention of ’ the AF*L*s Distillery, Rectifying and Wine Workers ot America. The union, headed by Joseph O’Neill, held its convention here which was attended by 400 del egates representing over 75,000 members of the union in the United Stales and Canada. Attorney Jacobs contended that high-pressure propaganda techni ques were being employed to “sell the American people a wolf in sheep’s clothing.” He said: “The American public is be ing victimized by a conspiracy of silence and soft words concern ing the operation of the new law Industrial interests are attempt ing to whiter ash the law and to show that labor has not suffered. Actually, the truth was revealed h-v the minority uport of the Congressional Joint Committee which charged that the Taft Hartley law is far more danger ous to legitimate labor rights than its proponents would have ” the public believe.” Specifically, the Chicago labor attorney pointed out that actual experience during the past year has amply vindicated labor's at tack tgains; the law. He dis cussed more than 15 injunction decrees and a series of NLRB decisions ur.dei which, he pointed out, labor’s rights have been seriously curtailed? In criticizing the law, Jacobs said: “Recent decisions have revealed that work ers may be forced to work on jobs against their will under court injunctions; workers are being required to work as strike breakers. contrary to the inter ests of their own fellow trade un ion members; and workers are being required to work with non union men who enjoy • the bene fits of organization without as suming any of the obligations f _..k._ft The speakers also attacked the sections of the law which provide that strikers who are replaced are prevented from voting in representation elections. “Recent ly,” he said, “workers who struck for better wages were replaced and were even barred from par ticipating in a representation election, in violation gf a Labor Board precedent established 11 years ago.” Jacobs predicted that opposition to the Taft-Hartley law would be the rallying ground for all pro labor and liberal groups through out the United States in the forthcoming election in Novem ber. “The Taft-Hartley law must go,” he declared, “if democracy is to survive in America. The essence of democracy in Amer ica consists of the protection of equal rights for all groups in so cial system. By dividing worker against worker, and employer against unions, and by discrimi nating against union grdups in our social and economic life, the Taft-Hartley law is undermining the structure of democracy in America.” AFL TRICK DRIVERS WIN $6 PAY INCREASE New York,—Over 40,000 truck drivers and helpers here will re ceive a weekly pay increase of $6 *under terms of a new 2-year contract reached by three locals of the AFL’s Teamsters Union and five employer groups. Under the new pact, which is subject to ratification by the parties, platform workers and helpers get a wage rise from $53.90 to 159.20. For drivers the wages vary with the truck ton nage. Drivers of 1-ton trucks re ceive $64.90; 2-ton, $65.90; 3-ton, $66.90; 4-ton, $67.90; 5-ton, 66.90, and 7 1-2 ton trucks $71.40. Tractor-trailer drivers go from $71.40 to $77.40 if they unload shipments. Where they do not unload, their rate is increased from $66.40 to $71.40. All scales are based on a 40 hour week.
