DUKE POWER COMPANY 'ctvtnp, ~th5 fleMnmib (jaxo&naL MANY STATE, LOCAL EMPLOYEES GET NO RE EMPLOYMENT RIGHTS Washington, D. C.—The re-em ployment provisions of the Selec tive Service Act of 1948, like those of previous acts, cover em ployees of private employers and the Federal Government, but not employees of States and their political sub-divisions, Robert K. Salyers, Director of the Bureau of Veterans’ Reemployment Rights, stated here. Both the old and the new re employment statutes declare it to be the sense of Congress that States snd municipalities should accord their employees re-em ployment rights similar to those given ex-servicemen by the Fed eral statutes. Salyers pointed out, however, that such restore tion is dependent upon Sut* laws. Many States adopted legisla tion or personnel policies insur inir reemployment of their em ployees who returned from the armed services, but in some in stances, these statutes have ex pired and must be reenacted if persons entering under the Selec tive Service Act of 1948 are to be adequately protected. Field representatives of the Bureau of Veterans’ Reemploy ment Rights have been instructed to ask State Re-employment Rights Committees to bring this matter to the attention of appro priate State officials, since most State legislatures will be in ses sion in 1949, Salyers said. Employees of States and their political subdivisions who expect to enter the military service should check to determine what their reemployment rights will be, Salyers warned. It can’t sit on its hind logs, but it can stop a corporation’s board meeting dead. It can’t whistle Dixie, but it can bring news faster than press or radio. It can’t balance a ball on its dial, but it can tell yon where to buy yours flowers and clothes. • How? Time Service does it.
