RENFROW REGISTER OF OEEDS Mecklenburg County Labor and Farmers Endorse Health Plan; Cruikshank Endsorse Practical Approach Washington. — Spokesmen for organized labor and the nation’s farmers joined forces in suppoft of President Truman’s health pro gram to mke available enough medical services to go around and to see that everybody has a chance to obtain these services. Appearing with Representative Andrew J. Biemiller of Wisconsin on a radio broadcast over the Mutual Broadcasting System net work arranged by the Democratic i National Committee were Nelson H. Cruikshank, the AFL’s director ( of social insurance activities, and James Patton, president of the National Farmers’ Union. Summing up the advantages of j the Truman plan. Mr. Cruiqshank praised it as the most practical program which has ever been presented to meet the health neetfs of the nation.” He said: “It is practical first because it is designed to take in nearly everybody. This is sound insur- | ance principle. “The real issue is not, as op ponents have tried to describe it,1 an issue between a compulsory and a voluntary program. The j issue is between a public and in clusive program as opposed to; Anniversary Greetings Carolina Sweets Restaurant SteVe Copses, Prop. 224 N. Tryon Charlotte, N. C. Twenty years of experience in this country have shown that the private plans can never meet the Today only about {,500,000 people in the United States have the complete protection that will be provided when the President’s program is adopted. “Secondly, it is practical be cause it meets the whole health problem. The opponents of pub lic health insurance have said that it represents a fine ideal but it cannot be put into operation in this country because we do not have enough health feilities—lo cal hea'th centers and hospitals and we do not have enough doc tors, nursse, dentists and other trained personnel needed to sup ply the needs. The President’s program takes these needs into account. It calls for aid to the medical schools, and also calls for increased aid for the construc tion of hospital and other facil ities where needed. "The program also calls for an increase in the amount of federal grants for public health services both legal and national. “The President’s program is a typical' American program as it relies on the principle of mutual self help. We have proved the soundness of this approach in other social insurances such as our federal old-age and survivors insurance, workmen’s compensa tion and unemployment insur ance.” Mr. Patton ridiculed the charge* that the President's health pro gram is '‘socialistic” or that it will encourage “political medical practice.” and declared: “Speaking as a representative of farmers, I say that the adop tion of the kind of large-scale health program for which the President has asked would be one of the greatest boon to farmers in all of their history.” Concluding the broadcast, Rep resentative Biemillerv summed up the many advantages for the na tion which would flow from adop tion of the Truman plan. He said: - “A nation is no better or more efficient than the health of its citizens. Simply because we are right now one of the healthiest nuations in the world, is no reason for us to be blind to our short comings and the necessity for so cial progress. “We have woeful inadequacies gnd startling inequalities in our social security and general wel fare and heatlh standards and facilities. To be sure, we have made great progress during the last 17 years of Democratic ad ministrations. But “Some” progress is not enough for Amer icans. “The introduction of the Na tional Health bill into the Con gress is another step along the road of progress toward more doctors, more medical researchers and technicians; more hospitals and better distribution of medical centers; a step toward complete health insurance coverage for all. In other words, the goal is com plete health and medical facilities for all the people.” WRONG TIME FOR NAM TO L ASK FTC INVESTIGATION Organized labor's old enemy — the National Association of Manu facturers — asks Congress to make “an immediate and intensive in vestigation’’ of the Federal Trade Commission. The N. A. M. is shooting in the wrong direction in its attack on the F. T. C. It’s one government organization which is doing a great job. If the time ever comes when the N. A. M. praises and defends the F. T. C. that’s when Congress should investigate the commission.
