by Secretary of Labor Maurice J.
Tobin for violations of the Walsh
Healey Public Contracts Act. A
suit for judgment was dismissed.
The penalty was for the knowing
employment of 2 under-age minors
for a total of 107 days on one of 5
government supply contracts
amounting to approximately $400,
000. The Public Contracts Act
provides for liquidated damages in
the amount of $10 per day for each
minor illegally employed. Other
violations charged in the govern
ment’s complaint included failure
to pay time and one-half the reg
ular rate of pay for work beyond
8 hours a day or 50 hours a week
and failure to keep adequate pay
roll and other employment records.
According to the Wage and Hour
and Public Contracts Divisions, U.
S. Department of Labor, this was
the third reaent case of its kind
in the southeastern region in which
the courts were resorted to, to
collect penalties incurred under
this law, which applies to contracts
I amounting to more than $10,000.
The U. S. District Court in Nor
folk, Va., on March 24, ordered the
Old Dominion Manufacturing Co.,
Inc., to pay .£27,322 in liquidated
damages for violation of the child
labor and overtime provisions of
the law. A week earlier, the same
court ordered the Dize-Hudgins
j Co., Inc., of Norfolk and Marcel
lus Hudgins, president to pay $3,

cases, the money will be distrib
