Total Employment Upturn Predicted; Factory Job Situation Still Unsettled W asnington.—The Census Bu reau reported improvement in the employment situation for the sec ond straight month, but tempered its optimism with the statement that the reported increase in jobs was “somewhat below seasonal ex pectations.” The bureau said the number of unemployed increased by 151,000 in April while employment rose 172,000. Significantly, the entire April increase in employment was due to the customary seasonal expansion in farm work. Nonfarm employ ment went down 255,000 while farm employment increased 427, 000. The number of unemployed— those out of jobs and looking for work—totaled 3,016,000. This com pared with 3,167,000 in March and 2.193.000 in April a year ago. Civilian employment amounted to 57319,000 against 57,647300 in March and 58,330,000 in April, 1948. The bureau counts as employed persons working as little as one hour a week. Also counted are per sons laid off for no more than 30 days as well as those ill, on vaca tion, or on strike. A breakdown on the bureau’s fig ures showed April employment in agriculture as 7320,000 against 7, 393.000 in March and 7,448,000 in April, 1948. The number of nonfarm jobs to taled 49,999,000 against 50354,000 in March and 50,883,000 in April, 1949. The general trend of improve ment in the labor situation was darkened in these respects: 1. In nonfarm industries, about 1.500.000 fewer persons were work ing full time (35 hours or more a week) in April than a year earlier. 2. Among the jobless, the length of time they are idle continued to rise. Some 600,000 of the April unemployed—about one of each 5 jobless—had been looking for work in vain for 4 months or longer. In March, only 500,000 were in that fix; in January, 300,000. The supply of available work ers remained on the rise, a fact which explains why unemployment failed to drop as much as employ ment rose. The bureau reported 60335,000 persons were in the labor force— either working or looking for work —when its survey was made in the first week of April. 93,617 UNION OFFICIALS FILE NON-RED AFFIDAVITS Washington.—The National La bor Relations Board reported that 93,617 officials of national and local unions had on file current non-Communist affidavits on May 1, an increase of 8,796 over the previous month. The 93,617 affidavits currently on file represent an increase of 25 percent over the 74,797 who had filed as of May 1, 1948. I Anniversary Greetings AMERICAN YARN AND PROCESSING COMPANY Mt. Holly, N. Health Rules To Safeguard Your Children Cautioning that the 1949 polio season is practically upon us, the National Foundation for Infan ts Paralysis has issued a list of precautionary measures to safe guard the health of children during the epidemic danger period. Normally, the polio danger pe riod runs from May through Octo ber, reaching its peak during the hot mid-summer months. Adults, of course, while general ly less susceptible than children, are not immune to infantile paraly sis. The following simple health rules recommended by the foun dation apply to all: 1. Avoid over-fatigue caused by too active play or exercise, or ir regular hours. 2. Avoid swimming in polluted water. Use only beaches or public pools declared safe by local health authorities. 3. Avoid crowds and crowded places. 4. Avoid sudden chilling. Remove wet shoes and clothing at once and keep extra blankets and heavier clothing handy for sudden weather changes. 5. Personal cleanliness is essen tial. 6. Keep food tightly covered and safe from flies or other insects. Garbage should be tightly covered and, if other facilities are lacking, it should be buried or burned. Symptoms of infantile paralysis are listed by the foundation as follows: headache, nausea or upset stomach, muscle soreness or stiff ness, and unexplained fever. Should polio strike in your family, call a doctor immediately. Early diagnos is and prompt treatment by qual ified medical personnel often pre vent serious crippling. Polio specialists emphasise that fear and anxiety should be held to a minimum. A calm, confident attitude is conducive to health and recovery. Parents are reminded that of all those stricken, 60 per cent or more recover completely, while another 25 percent are left with only slight after-effects. 1,230 Drivers . Lose Permits Raleigh, N. C.—A total of 1,230 persons lost their driver’s licenses in April as a result of traffic vi olations, the Department of Motor Vehicles announced today. Of this number, 933 were revo cations and 237 were suspensions, The figure represents a drop of 681 from 1,911 who lost their li censes during the same month last year. Drunken driving again topped the list of revocations. A total of 722 persons lost their licenses In North Carolina from this cause, as compared with 959 during the same month last year. April revocations brought to 2,474 the number of persons losing their right to drive as a result of this violation. NUMBER OF FACTORY JOBS NEARLY 5$% OVER ’49 LEVEL Washington.—The number of production workers in United States factories rose from 7,800,000 in prewar 1939 to 11,900,000 in 1947, an increase of about 50 per cent, the Census Bureau reported. Total wages of these workers increased from 19,000,000,000 to $30,000,000,000 in the same time, a rise of 235 percent. The bureau summarized data ob tained in the 1947 census of man ufacturers. It said reports from 241,000 manufacturing companies showed the value added to mater ials by the manufacturing process amounted to $74,000,000,000 in 19 4J, more than triple the comparable figure of $24,000,000,000 in 1939.
