MORSB Direetor-Geaeral Isterastieasl Labor Office Thirty years ago thio year, Sam uel Gompert, president of the American Federation of Labor, ex tended the helping hand which made possible the successful first conference of the International Labor Organisation in Washing ton, D. C. Mr. Gompers saw clearly that here was the modest beginning of something great and permanent —a world parliament of workers, employers and government repre sentatives seeking to bring about the economic stability and social justice which are the true founda tions of peace. Fifteen years after that first meeting in Washington, the United States became a member of the ILO and ever since has been send ing to ILO conferences a proces sion of distinguished leaders of labor, industry and government to assist in furthering these noble aims. From the AFL group I need men tion only two—Bob Watt and Frank Fenton—to remind you of the type of unselfiah men who lit erally sacrificed their lives to that men of all countries, races and faiths might find the world a bet ter place in which to live. Their fine tradition of international service is being ably continued in the present by the United States worker member of the governing body, George P. Delaney. It is only fitting and proper that on this Labor Day, 1M», the pres ent director-general of the organi sation which these men gave so much to create and build should dedicate his remarks to Sam Gom pers, Bob Watt and Frank Fenton, and to all the others who from the beginning 30 years ago have, helped the ILO to help the common man. The unions of North America, whose holiday it is, have much to be proud of in their growth and accomplishments at home. They also have much to be proud of in the quality of ambassadors they send to represent them overseas. New York Sfoto Federation Launches Great Political Drive Syracuse, N. Y. — Thomas A. Murray, president of the State Federation, closed the organise, tion’s annual convention here with the declaration that “we have launched the State Federation of Labor on the greatest political of fensive in its history.” “On the political front,” said Mr. Murrpy, “we have set up ma chinery for a state-wide political campaign that will sweep from of fice or bar from office those who support the Taft-Hartley Law or any other kind of legislation aimed at shackling the American labor movement. “We will call for the support of more than 3,000 AFL unions in this state and will carry the fight into every one of the 45 congres sional districts and into every election district where we have even one member. We mean busi ness and the results will be made evident this year and in 1950.” Mr. Murray, Harold C. Hanover, secretary-treasurer, and 14 of 15 vice presidents were .reelected without opposition after being des ignated by the convention’s of ficial caucus yesterday. It will be Mr. Murray's seventh term and Mr. Hanover's fourth. Michael Rossiter a member of the Hod Carriers Union in Buffalo, was elected to a vice presidency to succeed Clarence F. Conroy also of Buffalo, who resigned. The admin istration was installed by Emanuel Koveleski, former president of the federation.
