The UMW started a drive for a federal law after the mine dis aster at Centralia, 111., in -1M7, in which 111 miners were killed. An investigation of the disaster brought out that federal mine in spectors repeatedly had recom mended that the pit be closed until safety measures were taken. Under current law, Federal in spectors may only recommend ac tion. State agencies alone have the power to close mines or take other steps to enforce safety reg ulations.
