THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS
The Spirit of Christman is the greatest spirit the world
has ever known; for in its melody is the Love of God, the
Wisdom of God, and the Power of God.
Before Jesus came, the world had the conquering power
of Rome, but no conquering love. It had brilliant and ex
alted leaders, but none who was above all a Servant and a
Friend.
Jesus brought sacrifices to a wofld of selfishness, love to
a world of hatred, hope to a world of despair, and faith to
' a world of disillusionment Into a silent world He brought
a song. Into a faltering world He brought victory. He
spoke and the world still listens. He taught and the world
still learns.
The angels might have said, “Unto you is born a teacher,
a perfect example, a good man or a great prophet.” But
that isn’t what the angels said. And that isn’t the Christ
mas message.
The angels said, “Unto You a Saviour Is Born.” That is
the Christmas message! If you don’t find in Christmas
your Personal “Saviour, then you have missed Christmas.
It is so easy to almost observe Christmas; to catch the
spirit of giving, to try to make others happy, to let love and
good will have fuller sway in our lives. All these are part
of Christmas. The fenders and bumpers are part of the
car, but they are not the car.
Christmas is receiving your Saviour. Then because you
have received Him you give, you make others happy, and
all have love and good will
( May the Spirit of Christmas come into your heart anew
’ in His ever present newness this Glorious Christmas sea
May you accept in the spirit of deep friendship the
wishes and the hope of the editor of The I*abor Journal for
a Happy and Joyous season, and a year of good health and
good fortune.

Washington.—British trades unionists like the American Fed
eration of Labor’s campaign for the use of union labels on union
made goods. «
"The Town Crier," Birmingham, England, labor weekly, asked
AFL Secretary-Treasurer George Meany for information on this
practice. '
"This sort of thing is not done very much over here,” Editor D.
Rhydderch of the paper told Mr. Meany. “We thought it would be a
good thing to devote some attention to what is an admirable trade
union practice.
“I would like to borrow one of the little blocks you always have
on the front page of your Weekly News Service (Allied Printing
Trades Council). This would be a useful example of what your
unions do.”
Mr. Rhydderch also requested a copy of the picture published
by the News Service of the Glass Bottle Blowers and Retail Clerks
Association exhibit at the St. Paul convention.
I. M. Omburn, secretary-treasurer of the AFL Union Label
Trades Department, furnished a complete catalogue of union labels,
a history of the union label campaign, copies of some of the labels
and the News Service furnished the requests to make a sizeable
packet of information for Mr. Rhydderch.
The moral of the story is: If the union label campaign has stirred
so much interest in Birmingham, England, wouldn’t it be timely
to give a fresh boost to our campaign everywhere here at home?

along the Gulf Coast area of Mis
sissippi, with headquarters at Bi
loxi, a branch office at Pascagoula,
Miss., and a large hotel at Biloxi
for the convenience of its members.
Hie association is completing its
affiliation as rapidly as the
change-over can be made. There are
almost 4,000 members in the asso
ciation and all of its members will
be transferred to the Seafarers In
ternational Union in accordance
with the affiliation agreement.
The Seafarers International
Union chartered the Gulf Coast
Shrimpers’ and Oystermen’s Asso
ciation as a subordinate branch of
the Seafarers International Union
in the southern district.
Officers of the organisation are
Louis Simmons, president; Mackie
Fountain, vice president; Charles
Allen, secretary, and Leon Strong,
treasurer.
