S. Issues Stamps To Honor Gompers WASHINGTON.—Postmaster General Jesse M. Donald son has authorized issuance of a new 3-cent stamp to com memorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Samuel Gompers, founder and first president of the American Fed eration of Labor. The stamp will be placed on sale for the first time at Washington. D. C., on January 27, 1950, the 100th anni versary of Mr. Gompers’ birth in London, England. The size, color and design of the stamp will be announced later. It is expected to be the size of the “famous Ameri cans” series and will contain a likeness of Mr. Gompers. Mr. Donaldson, acted on a request of AFL President Wil liam Green and Secretary-Treasurer George Meany made in behalf of the AFL committee for observance of the Gom pers’ centenary. President Truman threw his efforts behind the request, one of 400 pending for 1950 commemorative stamps. Hie President was understood to feel that if only one commemo rative was issued next yqar it should bt in honor of the man who founded the AFL, the most enduring, oldest and biggest national trade union center in American history. C.. together with money order or postal note re mittance to cover the cost of the stamps to be a Filed. The stamp honoring the AFL's founder and Orst president will ho purple and printed in sheets of 70. It will be placed on sale for the Brat time on the 100th anniversary of Mr. Gompera' birth on January 27, 1950. The stamp in 0.85 by 0.98 inches (Famoua American aiae) in dimenaiona, arranged verti cally. The central deaign ia a portrait of Mr. Gompera. framed by a border of colonial deaign with a apray of lanrel leave* over the lower left portion. Below the portrait la the name “Samuel Gompera” in white Gothic on a dark background. The denomination “3 c" in the name style appears in the lower right corner.
