Measure
A Man?
When you "take a man's measure,” chances ax*
you. size him up' for his worth to th* community.
A business is judged the same way. If U is
legal... law-abiding... pays its share of taxes and
fill* a community need... then it deserves public
respect and patronage.
A good example is the Brewing Industry. It is
a legal, law-abiding business. A source of many
fobs with a large payroll,,it also contributes thous
ands of dollars in added revenue for public services
in your community. And it is taking positive steps
to intun that it does not lay itself open to criticism.
How? Through rigid sell-regulation ...tin fullest
possible cooperation with the Malt Beverage Di
vision of the State ABC Board in its periodic
checkups of all individuals licensed to sell beer.
Conditions are improving, and th* whole Industry
benefits accordingly.

j Two-Party System
i Only woman in the U. S. Sen
ate — Mrs. Margaret Smith of
Maine — believes very strongly
that our country needs two good
and strong political parties, and
that neither of them should stay
| in power too long “A change
is good in politics, as in most
other things,” she says.
As you know, Senator Smith is
a Republican and naturally would
like to see the Republican Party
in top position. Much as she be
; lieves in her party, however, she
believe# in her conscience more
ahd has several times voted
against actions sponsored by her
party’s leaderaip.
You probably read the Senate
speech she made against Senator
McCarth.v and his Communist
scare investigation. She made it
plain she would be ashamed to
win on such a platform Hun
dreds of letters have come to her
since then, from Democrats and
Republicans all over the country.
Eight to one, they approve her
view that decency copies first.
- The- eotmtry- would
active voters, Margaret Smith
says, and particularly more wo
men voters if everyone would
wake up to the fact that his vote
has a bearing on his poeketbook.
“A housewife's grocery bill, the
wages her husband brings home,
the education and health of hei
children all are tied in with what
her government does or fails to
do.
“If every woman would only
realize that her government is
not something remote but is a
day-to-day business that touches
her right at home, she would
never fail to vote. I get worried
because this is so often forgotten.
Roads, schools, dams. Every
body wants them, and that’s fine
just so long as those who insist
on them face up to paying for
them. And realize that the way
one pays is in taxes."

Judge Bosone has made an

Time and Doctors
We’ve heard that some doctors
now keep small hour glasses of
sand on their desks, like those
used for timing sott boiled eggs
The glass is turned over when
the patient arrives and when the
sand has run through the doctor
says: “Now that is all the time
I could give you if we had com
pulsory health insurance or so
cialized medicine. Just four min
minutes.”
What do they mean? Are
there so many people needing a
doctor’s care and not getting it
that a doctor actually thinks this
would be true if medical treat
ment should he made available
to all who need it? We thought
the argument against a prepaid
medical plan (and it’s not So
cialism) was that the country
didn’t need it.
Why Vote?
The head of the ' American
Psychiatric Assoication has given
us another reason why every eli
gible person should vote. In a
democracy, he jtaya, anyone who
doesn’t vote is hound to develop
a guilty feeling And a guilty
feeling does not make for mental
health. So vote, and maybe you
won’t need a psychiatrist.
