UPON the introduction of coffee
to Rome—long before we knew
how to remove its caffein — the
beverage almost suffered a fate
similar to its persecution in the
Mohammedan world earlier in the
16th century.
certain priests,
it’s said, asked
Pope Clement
VIII to excom
municate the use
of coffee “be
cause it is an in

devil." The Pope
asked to inspect
\ the drink. The
aroma was so
Sofaw was fooled pleasant that
Clement tried a
cupful and said: “We shall fool
Satan by baptising it and making
it a truly Christian beverage.”
Today we all are at liberty to drink
the perennial favorite—even those
of us who are nervous or sleepless.
For now, sold as “Sanka,” we have
a coffee free of caffein—something
new since Pope Clement’s day!

ACCORDING to market studies
by the Birds Eye people, several
million more Americans will drink
orange juice in its Sun-ripened,
vitamin-packed, most convenient
form — quick-frozen — within the
next year, we

Americans are
coming to take

name derives from the Latin
“aurangia”—fruit of gold.
F\ID You Know? “Soft" water
gives coffee a more desirable
flavor than does “hard" or alkaline
water. In particularly “hard” water
locations, it is advisable to use dis
tilled water for top coffee goodness.
... All citrus fruits should be re

best at 55 to 58 degrees F, Perhaps
handier is the new quick-frozen

U WHETHER the ocean waves

in the heart of the continent, quick
frozen fish can always supply deep
sea treats for stay-at-home shore
dinners. Birds Eye kitchen experts
suggest the use
of a little im

parsley, water
... added clast cress, sliced cu
cumber or pick
led beets can all add to the eye
and appetite appeal of an already
luscious dish. Slice lemons just be
fore using so they will look gleam
ingly juicy; crisp the radishes and
chill the cucumber. Melted butter
with lemon juice and finely chopped
parsley adds color as well as taste,
and so do paprika and melted butter.
You may cook quick-frozen fillets
either frozen or thawed. When there
is skin on one side—as in ocean
perch fillets—place them in skillet
or broiler skinless side down. It is
easier to turn and lift them with
out breaking when done if you
follow this routine.

TOBACCO PRODUCERS
GET WARNING
Highway Safety Director H.
D. Jones reminded tobacco pro
ducers today that they must dis
play twin red reflectors at the
rear of their trailers. The meas
ure, Jones said, is in addition to
the customary red stop light re
quired on all motor vehicles and
trailers.
The red disks should be not less
than four inches in diameter, he
said, and are to be mounted so
as to be visable at a distance of
at least 500 feet.
A heavy influx of tobacco laden
vehicles heading towards Eastern
North Carolina markets will make
nighttime traffic particularly haz
