C SPORTS SPORTS GAMBLING The possible infiltration of gam bling operations into amateur and professional sports will be the subject of an inquiry to be con lucted by a special committee, ap sointed by Attorney General J. Howard McGrath and including representatives of racing, boxing, professional baseball, college foot ball, professional basketball, col ege basketball and professional football. The chairman of the committee s Francis T. Murray, director of ithletics at the University of Pennsylvania. In connection with the an nouncement, it is emphasized that the inquiry should not be regard ?d as a “black eye” for sports. Apparently, no accurate informa tion on gambling activities is available other than recent dis 'losures involving college basket ball players in New York and the Vf id west. While the special committee vill do little more than study the situation and make recommenda tions for legislation, if necessary, t will have the power to focus public attention on whatever it reports. If the survey discloses no need for remedial legislation, the commitee will so decide and ts findings, we think, will do much to reassure those who are nclined to believe that there is rreater corruption in the sports leld than recent disclosures re pealed. Comment On Sports BY ED. SIMS WASHINGTON, D. C., Sept. 12. —Some months ago we Mid that the Chicago White Sox were the team of the year in the Majors even if the Sox didn’t win a pen nant. That still goes but the Sox may have to move over and share billing with the New York Giants. The Giants lost eleven straight games early in the season and the Dodgers pulled away in August to 13 and a half lengths. Even the most rabid Giant fan counted the Giants just about out of it. Yet, recently, the Giants knocked the Dodgers off in two to pull within five games of the lead ers. They had brought them selves that close on the wings of a 16-game winning streak. But, even now, no one knows if the Giants can possibly turn the im possible trick of catching the Dodgers. And indeed the day aft er the Giants had kayoed Brook lyn for the second straight day, they lost a game in the race by dividing a doubleheader while the Brooks swept two. Whatever the final outcome is in the National (this columnist took the Giants back in February) the New York club has moved farst in the last two months. And Leo Durocher can probably have his job back next year at his own price, or thereabouts. The thing which probably did it was a fire stemming from a burning desire to win. That’s what makes great ball players, like Cobb, Gehrig and Ruth, great. They like to win, but hate to lose even worse. That’s why Durocher traded some men and brought in others when he rebuilt the Giant*. He often says this or that player is his type of ballplayer, meaning they have fire, an intense devo tion to winning. Paul Richards me name way aoout njs base ball. He hates losing next to death. Not necessarily bad sports, theae people just can’t stand los ing. If the average fan were choosing a manager, this is the type he would choose. Joe Mc Carthy had that almost fanatical devotion to winning; he was the type. Durocher, of course, is the type, and should be given credit fdr his fine stretch drive. The old St. Louis Cardinals used to stage some grand stretch drives, in Sep tember, that kept all the fans on the edges of their seats until the last games of the yea^ Duroch er, an old Gas House ganger, hopes to do the same thing this month. But whether he does it or not, hi* try will do a lot for National League baseball which was threat ened with a runaway race just a month ago. It is always better to have a few teams, like the Red Delighted with the public’s re ception of “Samson and Delilah" and of “David and Bathsheba," Cecil B. DeMille plans to make the Book of Esther” as his next picture. DeMille’s “King of Kings” made in 1927, is still run ning. You’d never suspect it but new comer Mari Blanchard, who re cently was one of New York’s top model of bathing suits and is now one of Hollywood’s most promising young starlets, was crippled by polio when she was nine years old. She was paralyzed below the hips, in her right arm and right side of her face. Her : success in overcoming the disease was due to her mother’s words, “‘Never give in to polio.** Red Skelton’s picture, radio and television commitments may have j to await his doctor’s okay, when he returns from London. Red is said to be tired out and may be ordered to take a long rest before ! going back to work here. Bing Crosby’s eldest son, and current glamor boy, Gary, is plan ning to enter Stamford University this fall. He plans to finish school before taking up any other career—singing or acting. That dance team—Margo and Gower—who have flashed to the big time through spectacular spe cialties in “Show Boat,” won first attention from the producers by their version of the Charleston at the Mocambo night club’s famous Charleston contests a year ago. Eddie Bracken’s willingness help Preston Sturges out of a ■ financial hole” by doing a role in “Room Service” at the Players for free has certainly paid off. Eddie’s now in a picture in Warn ers and has been offered five more —“Sad Sack,” “Paradise Island,” “Size 12,” “The U. S. O. Story” —and one with Director Buzz Berkeley. With seven pictures still unre leased, Janet Leigh could, if she wanted to, quit the screen for a couple of years without finding . herself any the less popular. She has two unreleased pictures at RKO, “Jet Pilot” and “Two Tick ets to Broadway,” and five at her home lot, MGM. Having paid off his huge $12, 000,000 debt, David O. Selznick is returning to production in Octo ber with “My Counsin Rachel,” by Daphne Du Maurier. Seventeen years ago, Richard Widmark worked on a cattle ranch near Missoula, Mont. Re cently, when Dick arrived there Sox, Cleveland and New York— in the American—scrapping for the flag, than to have one domi nating the entire league horizon, like the old Yankees used to do under McCarthy.
