-TRAINING CIVILIANS FOR
AIR DEFENSE OF CANAL
{Continued From Page 1)
As foreign ships lay anchored
below the mountain emerging
from the sea (which is Flamenco
Island) the guns barked visibly
and showed that the United States
wvas working on Canal aircraft
^defense—but the foreigners didn’t
have any idea that the whole
show was a civilian one, the first
of its kind in the history of the
U. S. Army's anti-aircraft defense
program. These ships were wait
ing to enter the Panama Canal
From the Pacific side, and crew
snen could easily see the whole
.demonstration from their decks.
One of the targets used that
-morning, in the firing demonstra
tion which climaxed the six-weeks
training program, was a radio
controlled aircraft, which Hew
'Iback and forth above the island,
■giving the guns n real target to
sshoot at. A novel feature of the
plane was that it carried its own
parachute, and if hit, the aircraft
could usually eject a parachute
and float down to sea, to be picked
«p and repaired for another such
mission.
A vivid deemonst ration of this
parachute technique was given
-when the first of mesa radio-con
trolled planes took off. It soon
developed trouble and parachuted
into the Bay of Panama. Anoth
er plane roared of? to become
the potential enemy aircraft, and

official target.
Perhaps the most surprising
fact about these civilians and
their work is that they are paid
nothing for the effort, even
though they reported for instruc
tion three times a week for six
weeks. A recruiting program,
made successful by the local VFW
and American Legion, brought in
393 applicants, of which 266 were
accepted. Of that number, 193
were graduated August 25th. The
largest portion of those accepted
who did not graduate were those
who could not attend classes on
the days set up by vote of the ap
plicants themselves.
This reporter asked many of
these civilian guinea pigs if they
thought such a program would
go over in the States. AH were
enthusiastic. Army officers often
stressed different obstacles to be
encountered in the States. All
seemed to agree up to the point
that in case of war, this experi
ment would become national pol
icy.

he anxiety of the United States
and Great Britain as to Japan’s
future place in world affairs. Ob
viously, the threat of Soviet Rus
sia's aggressive might had much
a do with the willingness of
former enemies to attempt to
‘make friends" with the Jap

admitted, that Japanese leaders
have fully responded to such
;fforts and that the Japanese peo

to have accepted the idea of de

It wilf take some years to de

CURIOSITY SATES LIFE
Newton, Mass. — The curiosity
of Eleanor Wightman, 9, about
the presence of a “turtle” in a
