How About 2002?
(From the Commercial Telegraph
ers’ Journal, Frank B Powers,
Editors)
It will he interesting to see
how the Commercial Telegraph
ers’ Union looks in 2002, when
it will be 100 years old. Will it
still be in existence? Many at
tempts have been made to change
the name of the CTU during the
past 50 years. Will it be merged
with the telephone workers?
What kind of communications
system will then be in existence?
Radiofacsimile, transcribers, vide
voce scribers — just ask your
young son who is eagerly de
vouring those 2lst century picture
books.
If Western Union manages to
hang on for another 50 years
with its present and past policy
of profits first and service second,
third or fourth, will its manage
ment still be trying to add to
the workload of each employe and
reduce the cost per unit by per
haps letting the customer tele
graph directly to the consignee—
at an increased rate of course.
Or will Western Union manage
ment save proper representation
of employes elected by the union
membrship, with a voice and vote
on the policy of the company?
The unoin may even ask for a
voice in management, who knows ?

But we believe, as the CTt? con
vention recently decided, thet ;
there must be one and only one
officer in charge of management
or policy.
Employes, strange as it may
seem to some management peo- '
p!e, an* just as interested in an
increase of telegraph business, a
more widespread use of the tele
graph for business and social pur
poses. and as low a rate as is
possible.
Mechanization should have re
duced the cost of handling a tele
gram. We believe it has. We are
sure full use of mechanization is
going to continue to reduce unit
costs. <" I
Those savings should be given
to the employe, who is given add
ed duties and responsibilities, and
to the customer, who is tempted
to use either the telephone or the
airmail as costs of telegraphing
rise.
NO AIR CENSORSHIP
The Federal Communications
Commission has ruled that broad
casting stations have no right to
censor the content of political
speeches, even if they use state
and local libel laws as an excuse.
FCC said in ita view no liability
for libel rests against a station
as a result of providing a micro
phone for a legally qualified can
didate for public office to reach
the voters.
FARM PRICES
For the second consecutive
month, farm prices showed a rise
in October. The mid-November
farm price level was about 9.25
per cent above a year ago and
21.6 per cent above the pre-Ko
rea level, according to the Agri
culture Department.

OF U. S. AID; WILL FIGHT
(Continued From Pift 3)
the economic aid program in
Greece to end when similar pro
grams end in some European
countries. Per capita income of
f 128 must be raised, industrial
output greatly increased, and
farming methods modernized—if
Greece is to balance the budget.
Prime Minister Plaistiras,
pleading for continued economic
aid, told reporters Greece was in
a diffrent position from any other
European country, but added that
if the people are given a chance
to work and raise their .standard,
Greece will be the first country
to ask for no aid Of a total
labor force of 800,000, over 160,000
are currently unemployed in
Greece. But Plastiras told re
porters: “We will work toward
the end of foreign aid as soon as
possible.” He added that recov
ery depended on how much aid
was given by the U. S. in the
battle for a balanced economy.
Greece is considered a key to
the entire Balkan strategic situ
ation and Communist domination
would mean that both Italy and
Turkey would, in a sense, be out
flanked. That is why 190 em
ployees are on the ECA pay roll
in Greece—the largest ECA mis
sion in all Europe—and why more
than a billion U. S. dollars have
already gone into that country.
Yet the job is nowhere near done,
and some officials think it may
be five or ten years before all
U. S. aid can be discontinued,
which could make Greece the
most expensive U. S. aid project
attempted.
WHOLESALE PRICES
Wholseale prices reached 177.6
per cent of the 1926 average in
the last week in November, ac
cording to the Bureau of labor
Statistics. That was 13.2 per cent
over the wholesale price level be
fore fighting began in Korea and
2.9 per cent above a year ago.
