C. \ GREETINGS TO LABOR SCHACHNER LEATHER & BELTING CO. 1124 South Mint Street CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA HERE 'N' THERE The Sport Light BASEBALL Marty Marion's release as man ager of the St. Louis Cardinals surprised many fans, and provok ed most sports writers into criti cal comment of Fred Saigh, the owner. Marion reportedly, de manded a two-year contract, but Saigh says his policy is a one year one, and won’t change it. Under those circumstances, a dis agreement as to what is a fair contract, it is only proper that the owner have the last word, which he did Saigh has antagonized many baseball writers and some fans with past actions, and he may have given Marion a bad deal in this case, as most fans seem to think, but Marion did fail miser ably in one important task during the 1951 season, for which he cannot claim any credit at all. His Cardinals played dead just about every time the Brooklyn Dodgers took the field opposing them. For a team which has earned a reputation as Dodger-killer, that was painful medicine to fans and owner alike. It is, of course, true that Marion brought the Cards in third, higher than the year before, and that he had a bit of bad luck when his team was just getting rolling and a flu epidemic struck them down, j But the cold fgct is that Marion’s Cardinals could not beat the Dodgers—the team the winner in the National had to boat. Had the Cards been able to whip the Dodgers they would have found themselves in the pennant race, instead of being completely out of it, in Septem ber. To bring the team in third is fine, but if it cannot whip the Dodgers then it won't win the flag next year, nor probably the one after that. Marion failed to make even a creditable record with the Dodgers. It has been many a year since the Dodgers humiliated the Cards the way they did this year. Just about every time the Cards got hot the Dodgers ended the streak, often with a sweep of a series! Fans can remember it has been the Cards, in the last decade, who played the spoiler role for the Dodgers, when they rode high and mighty. I The comparative situation is ! Detroit and New York in the | American. In the last decade the Tiirers have whipped the Yanks more often than anyone else, and seem to take delight in beating the Yankees. That was the way it was with the Cardinals — in beating the Dodgers—until this year. And if the Cards do not regain that clutch ability to whip the Dodgers when the Brooklyn club is overpowering everyone else, they will win few flags in the near future. Maybe Fred Saigh was think* ing about that, in the back of his head, when he refused to give Marion a two-year contract. We're sorry, if that was the reason, but it certainly was a legitimate consideration ONl/ MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. What was history-making about the Army-Navy football game this year? 2.
