PHONE 4-1611 Food Prices Touch New Peak, Autos Rise Third Time In Year Prices surged upward prith re lentless pressure as the worst •hopping news of the year pour ed out of Washington into thi nation’s market places. Outstanding developments were: 1. Food prices have climbed t« -a record, all-time peak, the Bu reau of Labor Statistics reported. 2. More than 200,000 manu facturers were *;ivcn the green light by the Government to raise prices on a wide variety of prod ucts from food to plastics. Thu followed a previous order boost ing ceilings for 70,000 other com panies. 3. Automobile firms were per mitted to raise prices again — their third hike this year. The most paradoxical aspect of the situation is that the Federal Government, anxious to hold the line against inflation, is being forced by law to push prices up. That law is the Capehart amendment, which is taking a bigger bite each week out of the pocket book of the American peo ple. Before long the public will get a better understanding of why President Truman called it “that terrible Capehart amend ment.” In compliance with the Cape hart amendment, the Office of Price Stabilisaiton on December 5 issued an order authorising manufacturers to seek higher ceilings based on increased costs up to July 26. • Commodities affected by the or der include: Meat, milk, butter, clothing, to bacco, beer, drugs, cosmetics, wool GREETINGS CATHEY LUMBER CO. 501 W. A similar order issued in No vember applied to producers of a long list of staple items in I everyday use. Before long, OPS j officials indicated, every business j firm in the nation will be sc | corded similar latitude for price ; markups in accordance with the j provisions of the Capehart amend ! ment. On December 6 the OPS per mitted auto makers their third price increase since the freese of a year ago. It was reported that at least 8 major car manufac turers will take immediate advan tage of the opportunity to in clude higher costs up to July 26 in new price ceilings. ■ The BLS report on food prices covered the period between Oc tober 29 and November 16. The bureau’s retail food index as of the latter date hit 231.2, the high est gore it has ever been. The index uses the 1936-39 average as 100, for purposes of comparison. Sharpest rises noted were for fresh fruit and vegetables, 7.8 per cent in the two-week period; dairy products, 2.2 per cent and lamb, 1J per cent. It is distributing posters urging people to be good citixens and vote in 1952. The posters tell how long people have to live in Oregon to be eligible to vote. “Inquire of your union officers for additional information,” the posters say. Oregon trade unionists are get ting their voter registration cam paign under way early. The pri mary election in that state is not until May 16. The earlier a registration cam paign is started the mere people will he registered to vote. ...."Don't delay ... Do it Now," concludes the Oregon poster. That’s good advice for all trade unionists. Don’t delay. Start voter registration campaigns now. now. J. L. 6UIN YOUR WOOD FLOOR FINISHER Dial 2-3906 CHARLOTTE, N. C.
