In the bold face headings set flush left below are listed the problems. Set in light face paragraph under these headings is listed what the AFL believes Congress should do about these problems. THE PROBLEMS . . . WHAT CONGRESS SHOULD IK) ABOUT THEM Price Control A real price control latv should be passed to replace the phony one approved by Congress last year. Taxes A law plugging loopholes in present tax legislation should be passed. Housing Congress should make sure that houses and apartments are built that servicemen and defense workers could rent at prices they can afford. Rent Control The rent control law sHould be strengthened so that rents would stop increasing. Taft-Hartley Act _ The entire act should be repeal ed. If that is not done, the Amend ment to the set backed by tho AFL Building sad Construction Trades Department should be ap proved. Foreign Aid Countries friendly to the U. S. that need help should be given it. The U. S. should see to it that workers as well as employ ers in those countrise benefit from the aid programs. Social Security Old-age pensions should be in creased. More people should be able to get pensions. Health Insurance Congress should let people pay for their doctor bills through a national health insurance pro gram. Hospital Care If a national health inseurance program is noj passed, Congress should at least provide free hos pital care for people getting so cial security pensions. Doctor Shortage Money should be given to med ical schools and scholarships to students so more doctors, dentists and nurses can be trained. Jobless Pay Unemployment compensation should be increased. NORTH CAROLINA Minimum Vt|t The present minimum wage of 75 cents an hour should be raised to at least $1. School Shortage Money should be provided under a federal aid to education law to ! pay teachers more and build more schools. EXPERT SAYS: PLUG TAX LAW Support for AFL tax policies came from Dr. Seymour Harris, Harvard economics professor. In a letter to the Washington Post, he wrote: “The burden of additional taxes would be greatly lightened if the tax structure were improved; ctoe ing loopholes, abandmonet of in come splitting for married cou ples ” The AFL has pointed out time after time that the present tax system is unfair because under it rich people and corporations don't pay their fair share of taxes. The tax loopholes save hig oil companies $760 million a year; people who make over $10,000 an nually. a mere 10 per cent of the population. $2 billion a year; peo ple who get dividends, $300 mil lion, and those who make Mg do nations and leave large estates, $600 million.
