Lesson Teat: Matthew 9:9; Luke 5:27-39. Gradually, Jesus (fathered to gether around him those who were to share his ministry'. Ho I counted as one of his major; tasks the training of a group of capable followers. who would | carry on his work after his earth ly life was over. So much depended upon them, he realized, if they were to pos sess his spirit, share his compas sion and understand the truth which he came to reveal. They must be taught to rely, not on their own resources, but on the limitless and infinite power of God. Going about from place to place, as he would see a man who had the qualities he needed, Jesus did not hesitate to call him im mediately. Matthew, in his gos pel. modestly related his own call to discipleship. Briefly, he re counts that, as Jesus passed by Matthew’s place of business, “he saw a man, named Matthew, sit ting at the receipt oif custom: and he saith unto him. Follow me. Ami he arose, and followed him.” Because of his position as tax gatherer for the despised Roman government, Matthew was hated by his fellowmen. It was the custom of the Ro mans to “farm out” the taxes, so that the collector was responsible for turning over certain amounts of money and goods to the Ro man authorities. Whatever more he could extract from the people was sheer profit for him. More over, the greater his success in collecting taxes, the larger his opportunity for making a fortune. While we do not know whether or not Matthew had been dishon est, his past life, his position in the society of his day, and even his moral character were hardly; such as to commend him to Jesus. Yet, we note that' Jesus is more j interested in spiritual possibili- i ties and potentialities then he is; in human activities. Whatever Matthew's past life' had been, he became a new man | after accepting the invitation of Jesus. It is significant that, in the Christian life, it matters not so much what a man has been be fore his contact with Jesus, but what he becomes after such con tact. Matthew's lowly and de spised station in life was no bar rier to his becoming a disciple. God can use both the lowly and the lofty, if they are willing to be used. He needs persons in all groups of life to carry his gospel, for its mosseag is for people of all races and all classes of so ciety. Luke tells us that, shortly aft er Jesus, call, Matthew, probably to show his gratitude to Jesus for what he had done for him, de cided to hold a great feast in his home, to introduce Jesus to his friends. Jesus undersood and ap preciated this gesture, but it only served to antagonize the religious leaders, the Pharisees. Jesus' reply to them was apt, summing up the whole gospel in a sen tence: “They that are whole need not a physician: but they that are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repent ance." Not satisfied, the Pharisees per sisted in their criticism. Finally, he asserted that his conduct at the feast was in complete harmony with his mis sion. He replied to their criti cism that his disciples did not fast like John's disciples and the Pharisees, with two illustrations: (1) While the Bridegroom is pres ent, the wedding feast should go on; and (2) The fast must not fetter Christianity, for a new patch would tear an old garment and new wine would burst old skin bottles—which is to say— that the old teachers and rabbis are eclipsed by Christ, tha. new teacher, and hence old forms can not clothe the new spirit. The call of Matthew as a dis ciple shows that Jesus calls His followers from all walks of life and He expects those who accept Him' to be His disciples in every walk of life. While He may call some to particular places of serv ice, He expects all of His follow ers to live for Him, every day of their lives, in whatever vocation they may choose. GREETINGS U. S.
