Do-Nothing Congress
Irking U. S. Workers
BOSTON.—"American workers have become thoroughly
fed-up with the present do-nothing Congress and the AFL
will do everything in its power to bring out a full vote
and spread far and wide the reprehensible voting records
of the members," said the AFL Executive Council in ses
sion here.
A case in point, con
tinued the council statement,
“is the extension of emer
gency economic controls.
The Defense Production Act,
which authorizes price ano
wage controls, expires on
June 30.It is obvious to
the great majority of the
American people that price
controls need strengthening
and tightening. Despite
ample supplies of consumer
goods, retail prices are still
at record-breaking levels and
threaten to go still higher.
Has Done Nothing
“Yet Congress has done
nothing. It has deliberately
stalled for more than four
months. Reports from Capi
tol Hill indicate that Congress
will wait till the last mo
ment and then vote to con
tinue controls for another
year in weakened form.
“That would be a major
concession to the big busi
ness interests of the nation.
They want to abolish price
controls altogether. The poli
ticians on Congress fear
such drastic action would be
dangerous m an election
year. So they are planning
to accomplish the same pur*
pose by making price con
trols still more ineffective.
“A year ago. Congress
adopted a series of,amend
ments to the Defense Pro
duction Act which seriously
handicapped the price con
trol program. One of these
special interest actions,
known as the Capehart
Amendment has cost con
sumers a billion dollars al
ready. according to official
estimates. If a recent court
ruling is upheld, the Cape
hart Amendment will be ap
plied at the retail level, as
well as to wholesalers, and
prices will be forced still
higher.'’
The Executive Council
urged Congresss to take
these* facts into considera
tion and face up to the grim
realties of inflation in the
public interest.
The patience of the pub
lic, the patience of the work
ing men and women of this
country, is not inexhaustible.
