Family “Type Farmers
Unite’ In Co-operative
HAMMOND. LA.—Over 3,500 farmers, comprising all of
the fruit and vegetable growers in this southeastern Louisi
ana area, have organized a union affiliated with the AFL
National Farm Labor Union and are pioneering in an ex
periment that may result in wedding the family-type farm
■er to the industrial worker and halting the trend to large
scale, corporate farming.
Through the work of their
organization — Local 312 of
the Louisiana Fruit and
Vegetable Producers Union
—farmers in this section are
receiving a fair share of the
profits from their products
that are sold on the markets.

Following a few unsuccess

who had been trade union

established the union despite
bitter opposition from pro

They received help from

Unions Are Financing
Israel W oodworking Mill
(Special Correspondence)
CHICAGO.—On a recent Saturday evening, at the Cove
nant Club in Chicago, something happened of importance
to the carpenters of Israel, to wit, a banquet sponsored by
Carpenters Local 604, AFL, of Chicago.
About 500 banqueteers
paid $50 a plate to attend.
The object was to raise mon
ey to put up a woodworking
mill in Beersheba, where
door frames and window
sashes are a scarce commod
ity right now'.
Beersheba is the place
mentioned in the Bible a?
the southernmost point of
Jewish ancient territory
"from Dan to Beersheba." It
is an old city in name and
location, but a new one in
everything else.
Four years ago, after 3,500
Arabs left, there was prac
tically nobody in Beersheba.
Today there are 18,000—from
Bulgaria, Romania, Poland
—French Morocco, etc.—but
nobody from Local 504 of
Chicago or Local 1073 of
Philadelphia.
But Locals 1073 and 504
proposed to finance the build
operatively through a credit
union.

Utilizing trade union meth
ods and techniques, a solid
marketing organization was
created.
The union, with headquar
ters here in the strawberry
capital of the United States,
has anchored itself firmly by
securing written agreements
with every handler of fresh
produce in the area. Agree
ments with all the canneries
provide that these companies
buy produce only from union
members.
The small farmers, seeing
the benefits of union organi
zation, are making plans to
organize other family-farm
operators in other Southern
states. Plans also are being
laid to make all the rural
parishes (counties) in Louisa
iant M)0 per cent union.
The union is co-operating
with Labor's League for Po
