NEW BENEFIT FORMULA Although old-age and survivors insurance benefits which become payable Juiy 1 and thereafter will usually be larger than those now being paid, this does not mean an increase for present beneficiaries. The larger payments are brought about by a provision of the 1960 Amendments to the Social Security Act which will permit the average monthly wage to be computed using only wages paid after 1950. For most claimants, the average monthly wage will be larger when computed over this short period than it would be if all of the wages and time since 1936 were used. Since the aver age monthly wage determines the benefit amount, this new method of computation will generally result" in larger bene fits. In those few instances where computation of the aver age wage since 1936 would produce a larger benefit, it will be possible to use that method of computation. John Doe's case illustrates the application of this part of the law: John’s wages were very low in the years 1937 through 1SMQ, although he has been paid wages of more than 13,600 in each oi the last six years. Had John ap plied for his benefit last year, his average wage since 1936 would have been $180 and his benefit based on this average would have been about $61. By working through June of this year, John has an average wage of $300 over the l» months since I960 arid his benefit amount will eventually; be $80 per month. Thus, by the application of the new benefit formula, his monthly benefit is increased by about $l8. Because of technical considerations such as this, So cial Security Administration offices recommend that persons now contemplating retirement discuss their individual cir cumstances with a representative of the local social se curity office at 122 East Third Street, Charlotte, North Car olina. - WHAT’S DOING IN ’52? ‘~ The domestic scene is spotlighted with elections: Senate, House, and the Presidency.
