TRUMAN ASKS ACTION
ON SOLDIER VOTE
President Truman a train urged
i Congress to loosen up the vot
ing laws of servicemen and
women. He explained that hun
dreds of thousands of service peo
ple would not qualify to vote this
year under state laws.
Most states with inadequate
voting laws will not convene their
legislatures this year, Mr. Tru
man pointed out. He urged pas
sage of a bill “designed to en
able those who are defending our
form of government with their
lives to exercise one of the basic
rights of American citixens—the
right to vote.”
The present federal voting law
is chiefly advisory. Armed forces
personnel cannot use the federal
ballot unless they meet voting
requirements of the states. It
urges states to provide absentee
ballots for servicemen and pro
hibits collection of poll taxes
from them. It also provides ad
ministrative machinery for regis
tering and balloting.
A group of administration sup- *
porters recently introduced legit- j
lation providing for a federal bal
lot to be supplied members of
the armed forces wherever state
election laws are inadequate.
