AFL Director Lew Rhodes _ i Addresses Southern Workers ' By J. L. RHODES,, Regional Director, American Federation of Labor ATLANTA, GA.— Labor Day, 1953 finds the American Federa tion of Labor enjoying the high est numerical membership in its history. The wages of workers are at top leveL While certain signs of an ec onomic roll-back grows stronger, employment of workers in the majority remains at a very high level. All of these things add up to general prosperity for the workers in America. This is done in spite of tRe “hard money” pol icy of the national administration, for it must be remembered that “hard money” policy is good only for the rich or for the person who has money, for when money gets too hard to get it becomes a "hard-to-get" item with the work ing people. Barring economic setback that some of our country * say is in evitable, the American Federation of Labor and its members ap | proach another year with the [ possibility of retaining and main taining a fine standard of living. These things have been accom plished by determination of union i men and women throughout America and they must be main tained by the same spirit in order that the American standard of living may be maintained and kept hi«l|. On the other side1 we want the American Federation of Labor since its founding has maintained a stand against totalitarianism. President Samuel Gompers took an early and firm stand against rotten dictatorship. He fought the Socialist^ who Vere the “left ist” in his day. He fought the Anarchist. The late William Green, Presi dent of the American Federation of Labor, early in the 20’s warned the nation against communism. His Labor Day address of 1923 told of communism’s unsound doc trine and warnedt- the American workers to sUy glean and free ' from such connect*^*. President Gealfi^ Manny, the President of the American Feder ation of Labor today, has enjoyed world-wide activity against com munist aggressives. He has fought their economic unsound ness; he has made it clear to all that America had no place for them. He has kept the American Labor Movement free of any and all entanglements with com munists on the world front. All this adds up to a safe and sound policy for American Labor. It means that American citisens are safer from totalitarianism than they would be it there was no American Federation of Labor. Free American labor must have repeal or drastic amendment to the Taft-Hartley Law, a new form of totalitarianism in Amer icn. I take this method of extend ing Labor Day Greetings through out the South to all of our mem bers. May nest year bring pros perity and stability to the Amer ican Workers, and a growth of the American Federation of La bor in the South which will as sure the Southern workers of a sound economic position.
