An intelligent farraer in the com
munity eaid to us a few days a'o
that there is a great need for farm
ers to study their business more
closely with uu eye to learning more
about what other gocd and intelli
gent farmers think and do.
We were very much impressed
with the truth of the remark, and we
hope to bee i ho tunc soon come when
the great mass of our farmers will
wake up to the fact that there is
uuioh to learn iu their profession.
Ihe old way of doin things is pass
ing away in other things, and farm
ers must make themselves intelligent
by constant application, both in
study and experiment, if they would
keep up with the world that depends
upon them for sustenance.

After 30th of this month the time

so let us continue our work. No
man can afford to be indifferent
to the calls which the dire necessity
of the times make upon him.

those be branded who, in this su
preme moment of danger t3 our pre
cious and long cherished liberties,
slink away from the first call of the
tocsin, or who beg ofTat the approach
of danger. The two great contend
ing forces in our national govern
merit are even now already arrayed
against each other for the Watertoo
which must be nut in November
next. Whose thall the victory be?
Shall the Anglo-Saxon race , whose
superiority La8 been a marked char
acteristic from the earliest butory
f their conquests , shall they con
tinue to rule, or shall their letharej'
in this hour of great peril to their
liberties invite and welcome the
I rule of auother race inferior beyond
comparisor,?
Those of the Democratic Dirty
who are careless and negligent as to
their political duties and their polit
ical privileges have not yet realized
the fact that the issue, in a great
measure, has ceased to be one of
partisan feeling , and that it has
oecome a race question instead.
And yet Kieh is the case. We
hear leaders of the Republican party,
especially the colored men, speak of
race representation.
Ah! that's it. Kace representa
tion I Then, in the nane of the
favored race whose blood courses
our veins ; in the name of the vast
armies of the heroes of our own ua
tionality, whose bones have bleach

name of the unparalleled prosperity
of the grandest and noblest nation
of earth to-day ; in the light and in
telligence op this progressive cen
tury ; in the hope of the continued
libert) which weas a people shall en
joy from victory ahead, or in the
dread of the certain thralldoni that
shall fall upon us from defeat in the
approaching November election ,
what mall of Saxon blood, 3f genuine
love of liberty , and with a true
sense of American manhood, can
afford to be indifferent now? Let the

sponse be positive, Victory must be
