Our readers will please exeuc for eayiag nothing about Ihe Repub lican nominations ht-t week. wexc eick in bc-3 an-i couM not write. J In our article lust week relative to the Chowaa anl South'-rn Railroad, the types rsao'c us say "300 Tea" rami "a hundred. where we shuuld Slave aii "300 yards" and "a hun ilrcd yards,'' in speaking of the pro liable distance for trestle work mi either side of Roanoke rivt-r at Nor fleet's Kerry. Why flhould any one wiMi a change in our national representation from such true and tried Senators as Rftnaom and Vaneo to some who may fill their place? it is all folly to talk about changing. Look at the recent appropriations for North Car olinn. Random and Yance have gone li tay. The Kcrnocrats of the Senate held a caucus in which they voted to op pose the usual adjournment from Thursday till Monday. We highly command this position taken by our Democratic representa tives. It is a noticeable and almost a notorious fact that legislators in almost every capacity of government from the United States Senate down, trifle away too much of the time for which they re paid to use for the people's, interest. The Republican representatives have no higher ambi tion than 10 legislate for their own advantage and spend their time as best suits themselves and their par ticular conveniences. And now if our Democratic re prcsentatives can succeed in putting a check upon such extravagance of time, all honor to them for the effort to do so. With the salaries they get Sen ntors and Representatives owe all their lowers for the time to the task of doing well their work. TIIK FKJII'I'. Many and various opinions have been Riven since the nomination of Harrison and Morton on the Nation al RepuOlican ticket, as to bow easy r how hard it will be to defeat the rej uhlicans in the coming election. There is not so much in a name,'' after all in this matter. The i;reat question for us to settle is How much are we going to do?" It will matter little who is the nominee if the Democratic party will do full duty. Rut if we begin to rest on our oars and say that we shall gain the victory simply because this Uian or that has been nominated, or because this man or that has not been nomi nated , we shall find our mistake atec U is too late. The manly thing, the patriotic thinir, the sensible thing for us all to ds ill be the exertion of our very best efforts at every point , and Ihus leave no wanner of chance for defeat by the republiican- Our State interests are not safe as long as the euemy is a-field ; our nations h1 interests are not safe as Jong as there is a single leader to sound the war cry for the waiting thousands to vtch up and herald from Dust to post. Harrison and Morton are going to work, and Cleveland and Thurman must not be idle. Dockery is going to work, and Fowle must not be idle The Republican party is going to work, and the Democratic party must not be idle. Kacb Individual republican is going to work , and no democrat must be idle. Activ ity gains the victory, lethargy loses it. 1 THK SKITK J IJKK ! Til. Amendments were agreed to as follows : Increasing the appropria tion to complete the improvement of the Cape Fear river below Wilming ton, N. C, from $100,000 to $245, 000; increasing the appropriation for l'amlico and Tar rivers , from the mouth to the falls at Rocky Mount, NT. C, from 5,000 to $10,000, and of lioanoke river, N. C, was the subject of a long discussion, the amendmentbemg opposed by Mr. Edmunds and advocated by Mr Iian8om. There tto cur-.es restic 'Tnn he Uountr that ought to be remov ed. Roth are the results of Repub lican legislation and Republican op pression. To-day there js more tl; u i-.ai fino fno i.f tlio r)f)tile's mor.evl ' rung from them by unjust taxation, fthelat two Secretaries of the Treasury have told the truth. C!e e ianl'8 secretaries f'f.ve reported year !y for the last lour years from one hundred to one hundred and forty inillioi.s surplus annunlly over and above the Dec-iss'Ues of the govern ment. What has become of that . . ! larsr Arthur ana nays secretaries reported a surplus oi more than hi hundred million. What has become of it? The c untry would like to know. If there is no other way to get rid of this robbery and swindl ing brought upon the couniry, the peo pie ought to rise in their power and vote the men an 1 measures out of existence who inflicted tins great wrojg upon the pcnple, and who in sist on keeping it upon theni. Why e-ollect $100,000,000 annually from tue people more man rue govern o :nent needs? It .seems lhat the m :le are taxed to the point of siar a tion and nakedness out, of pure un adulterated meanness. The govern ment has no earthly use for the money other than for thieves to break in and steal. The other wrong is the uses to which this blood money is put by the Secretaries of the Treasury. Congress by acts allows these sec retaries to deposit the idlo monies in the Treasury in national banks without Interest. This is wrong damnable and infamous. It is worse than infamous and nefarious to coN lect money from the people over and above the needs of the government and then loao it to the National banks without interest; but these two words are are the only ones we can remember that start in the dir ection of our meaning. Th Nation al banks selected by the Secretary take this money and speculate on it and may make stx or eight per cent, on it. In plain English, the govern ment robs the people yearly of over one hundred million dollars for which it has nO use , and loans it to the moneyed kings aud lordn of the land without interest , and with this money aud its profits they buy u I Congress and the SatC Legislatures and thereby control the Legislation and the people more absolutely than the Czar of Russi conirolls his sub jects. Ought not the people to re belt Ought they As gooi citizens to longer submit to such wrongs , outrages and oppressions? We would like to manufacture p wrtr'd. for neither tbc Greek, Latin nor English tongue so far as our inform ation goes, contains a word strong enough and meaning enough in in famy to describe the X-.hv makers from the day f.ett si rendered up to this hotir in the Federal Congress. By these shylocks since tde war the people have been robbed of more than two thousand billion dollars' And this too ever and above the legitimate heeds of the national gov ernment, the fctate governments, county and city governments. Half of the earnings of all the babo'"-ing-people In thU COulitry since the var have in one way and another under Republican legislation found its wy in to the pockets of shylocks and blood suckers against conscience and against justice. This thing ought to stop? and it ought to stop now. For every towel, cup, wash pan. trace chain, hammer, saw, coat, dress, knife or any other article bought and consumed in this country, the buyer and consumer pays a bonus indirectly to the manufacturer of the article whatever it may be. Well, if this thing can't be stop ped, and we have got to be robbed, oppressed, outraged and fleeced all our lives, we would like to see Cons gress dynamited about twice a year from now until the end of time.
