WHAT HE THINKS OF THE
SOUTH AS SEEN BY A DEM
OCRAT OF THAT STATE.
Editor Scotland Neck Democrat: '
Dear Sir: Your suggestion
that I write an occasional
tetter for Tun Democrat leaves so
much latitude that it is somewhat
diilicult to decide just what would be
most acceptable or appropriate for
our columns.
Perhaps a description of the typic
al Iowa rppublieau as a member ot
the dominant and ruling political
party might do as a starter.
His r u 1 i 11 2 passion there is a con
suming bitter aud relentless hatred
of Southern Democrats because of a
sincere belief inculcate 1 by political
speakers of his own faith that he,
tho Democrat, spends all his time
either shooting negroes or white Re
publicans at the polls, ana other
treasonable performances or in curs
ing the Norh, and lamenting the
dost cause."
Not that he cares a copper for the
colored man only as a factor in per
pctaating Republican rule which he
regards as above every other thing
under heaven.
Some of them were soldiers in the
war, but the most vindictive bigoted
and senseless blind partisans among
them are they who during the late
unpleasantness had business in the
Queen's dominions or were of an ifge
when they wore white pants cut bias
and were "puling and puking in
their mother's ours."
He is the gentleman who swells
and sfut3 and talks of "copper
heads" and d n3 "Jeff. Davis" and
hopes to sec the day when "Southern
Republicans" will be protected. This
by the way was to happen if Har
rison was elected. Auother part of
his creed is that the higher the
manufacturing establishments are
protected, lbor wages will be in
creased. He pays no regard to fig
ures, experience reason or common
sense, tie knows that the wealth, and
population of the country have in
creased enormously since 1S(1 and
curiously for just exactly that time
import duties have been exorbitant .
' Post hoc cvjo iroittr hoc" is the
foundation stone of his reasoning.
For the rest he regards himself in
exactly the same class as the 1'harN
tee of old and thanks God continual
ly that he is not as other men,
He honestly believes , and nothing
can shake his conviction, that the
honor, intelligence, morality and
good citizenship of the country are
in the Republican party, and deems
it impossible to be a Christian and a
Democrat.
He is conviaced that the dwellers
in the slums '-f cities are to a man
Democratic and whenever a Demo
crat is elected President he is elected
by their votes, utterly oblivious of
the fact that the two worst cities in
America are one of them Philadelp
hia, reliably Republican, or like
Chicago goes that wav as often as
the other.
