It is due to the people of the State, whose institution' this is, to the friends of justice and fair dealing, and to myt,eK, to state some facta which prompted my resignation as Superintendent of the Noith Caro lina Insane Asylum. A long and patient investigation of many weeks was conducted to in quire into charges of uuworthy con duct preferred against me by sub ordinate oilicers of the asylum, con- ceivea in all the malic thai: char-1 acfcri;:?3 men vho conspire for evil ouda ai:d who permit no obstacles of truth orhoneity to stand in t tic way of long chenchcu schemes of aran- ! d;;:on;t nt upon t ho ruin (f others, aided bv suboriied testimony,!'1, a proteciitinu bitter at id iolent, in pn-porU-m it was impotent and futile. I was acquitted of the vile charges, by the board of directors who wen: intimately acquainted with my management of this asylum for many ycar.
