I have used your vegetable preparation, Nolandino, and find it a valuable agert in the treatment of functional diseases of the liver. Its action on that organ and se creting glands is equal to that ot calomel and, to my mind, the only yet discovered substitute for this time-honored remedy. It is, furthf rmore, entirely free from con stitutional effects too often observed from the use of mercurials; and in many cases where mercurials have been incautiously administered, I have witnessed the bene ficial results of Nolandine in eliminating and modifying the most distressing after symptoms. 1 cheerfully recommend a trial of No landine to the profession, believing that it will stand their test. Very truly yours, . A. TREAT CLARKE, M. D. Cures Dropsy of theChest andAbdomcn. The very high character of the testi monials attesting the merits of your vegs etable preparation, Nolandine, induced me to make a test of your Nolandine pro per in a very desperate case of Hydroth rax dropsy of the chest, combined with Ascities dropsy of abdomen. The usual remedies known to our profession had been most skillfully administered without producing anticipated effects. The dis eases yielded to the action of your No landine. I very gratefully state that my patient is now enjoying the blessings of a restoration to gcod health and now, four months since administering of yourNoland ine, there is not a symptom of recurrence. I know that I will incur the displeasure of the profession by departing from its usages, but candor and facts compel me to call the attention of my professional brethren to the valuable properties of your preparation and trust that prejudice will not deter them from its use. I have found the action of our Nolandine on the liver and secietions more than equal to calomel, which is an additional recommendation. Vcr respectfull, A. G. JONES, M. D, A General Tonic and Elood Purifier. T. W. Johnston, Proprietor of Nolan dine: During the last twelve months I have had frequent opportunities of testing the curative properties oi your egetable Nolandine in the following diseases, and in not a single case did it fail to accom plish all that you claim for it: Dyspepsia and other catarrhal affections of the stom ach and bowels, catarrhal affections of the kidneys and bladder, uterine catarrh and irregularities, malarial complications and habitual constipation; and as a gens eral tonic and alterative I have found it very efficacious. ' Those who toil bravely are strongest; The humble and poor become great: And from those brown-handed children Shall grow mighty rulers of State. Tlie Comfort oi Ugliness. Give men or women minds big enough and they will not think of and the world will not worry itself about their faces, though they may be as plain as Charlotte Cushman , as rugged as Ralph Waldo Emerson, as ugly as George Eliot. Poor, little misshapen Pope said : ''The mind's the standard of the man,'' and the world said "Amen I" He had the mind. It is useless arguing with c young girl that beauty is not a bless ing. It is in her nature to want to be pleasing and admired. Sue seea roses loved and worn because they are beautiful, and she would be of them and with them in the rose leaf longing times of her spring in the world. Homely girls have sat up nights to cry and thinking of fairer faces that have been more courted because fairer, have fallen asleep on pillows wet with tears that have come from kindly eye?, and dropped from homely cheeks in sympathy. Tell them that beauty is only skin deep, and that .t brings unhappiness, and they will still sob : "Give me the beauty," It is like telling a poor, tired , overworked man that "great wealth only brings misery." He will still wish to take the chances on a little wealth. But all the same there is lots of comfort for the home ly. They can be good and wiae and, having mach time a'.vay from their mirrors and their flatterers, can think and do great things. First Class. Some persons seem foolishly to imagine that wealth entitles them to privileges not accorded to the gen eral public, and exempts them from obligations and rules to which others are expected to conform. The New Yo7fc-Led.er reports an incident which occurred on one of our i.eean steamers, and which con veys a wholesome lesson to all nurse proud ignorers of the rights of the majority. A family of unlimited wealth had secured the best accommodations the steamer afforded. The gentleman ami Lis wife kepi themselves seclud ed t tie irost of the time, but the children were allowed to run wild over the steamer until they became saeh intolerable nuisances that the captain was spoken to, and he gave tae youngsters a severe reprimand. This roused the indignation of the mother, who reraarkt-d to toe captain ' ' that , as she paid first class fare, 8be thought she was entitled to first-class privileges. "Madam," 3aid the captain, '-firsU class fare means first-clas3 conduct." There was no further pretest. Austin', Tex., August, 2-lui, 1SS7. This is to certify that my son Fred has been troubled with catarrh for the past two year?, and after using William Radam's Microbe Killer three week?, I think he 13 entirely cured. The Norfolk and Carolina railroad passing immediately through the Scotland Neck section adds very greatly to the valu9 of the land?, as transportation facilities are all that could be desired. The natural fertility of these lands can be grently improved by the large quantities ot'the best marl un der the surface. It baa been esti" mated tbst with a proper system of diking and other improvements, the corn cobs raised on these lands would be sullieient to burn shells for making lare quantities of burnt lime, and the shells could be ship ped to these lands at a mere nominal cost. WThile statistics given in a former paper show that the Roanoke lands produce cotton freely and in large quantities, yet these lands are more especially adapted to gram and grass crops , fruit3 and truck farm ing. These lands have never been brought to their best state of cul tivation, not even before the war when they were worked by slave labor. It is confidently, believed by the most observant citizens of this section that within the next decade the capacity of these land3 will be better known, and that before the first quarter of the 20th century has passed, Scotland Neck w ill be the richest section in North Carolina, and will not be surpassed by any like section in the South. SCHOOLS AND CHURCHES. Resides the great fertility of the lands, there are numerous other causes and influences which warrant the prediction and give the anticipa tion the appearance of a vetity al ready realized. From the first the people of the Scotland Neck region have been firm believers in the truths of C:ir;3- tianity, and have been very careful in the observance of the duties which it enjoins. The leavening influences of thf Baptist and Protestant Episcopal churches have been operating ia the coramunitj since the colonial days; and these, together with the i nil 1 ences of the Presbyterian, Kehnkee Baptist and Methodist Episcopal churches, have so shaped the moral and religious trend of the commu nity that it is more widely known for its social, moral aud religious ad' vantages and influences than any p'.ace of like size ia North Carolina. Tte Baptist and Episcopal church es are in a flourishing condition ; while tha Methodist, Primitive Bap tists and Presbyterians have a good influence in the community alsu. Perhaps no place in the South hffs made more rapid strides in temper ance reform within the last ten ye: rs than Scotland Neck. There i3 an independent temperance orguniza. tion in the town known a3 "The Scotland Neck Temperance Associa tion,'' which has done much to abate ths sale and use of intoxicating liq uors. Itha3beenin operation just three year?, and more than 400 per sons have been enrolled on its list of membership, and the entire section ha3 been greatly benefited by its in-, fluence. The educational advantages of Scotland Neck are a3 good as the best, In 1810 a school of high grade was organized sad chartered under the name of "Vine Hill Academy," and has continued in successful op eration ever since. Some of the best educators of the State have had charge of it at dif ferent times , and men who have been eminent in all the professions received their academic training here. The school is now in a highly prosperous condition under the man agement of Profs. V. C. Allen and F. P. Shields. Also the female academy of the same institution is in a flourishing condition, and is do ing successful and praiseworthy work under the principalship of Miss es Lena Smith and Eunice McDowell who have had charge of it for many years. The health record of Scotland Neck cannot- be surpassed by any section in North Carolina east of the Blue Ridge, and it i3 the opinion of the oldest inhabitants that no place in the State is more uniformly free from malaria and epedemic than this. As was observed in the first num ber of this series, Scotland Neck is situated directly on the water-shed between . the Roanoke and Tar rivers. At a point in Mam street in the Northern part of the town the divide is so distinct that the water runs from that point North into the Roanoke and South into the Tsr. While the town ia within seven mile8 of the river , it is singularly free from all malarial affections, and typhoid fever so common in the sec lions higher up in the State, is sel dom known here to any fatal degree. Being in the long leaf pine belt it ia especially free from all lung trou bles acute and chronic. Pneumonia is extremely rare, and consumption ia not common. Scotland Neck being about 100 miles from the coast, and being on the water-shed before mentioned, is almost entirely free from some ob jections, in matters of health, of what is known as Eastern Carolina. SOCIAL AND INTELLECTUAL. The inhabitants are noted for their social, moral and intellectual superi or', and the stranger never comes and goes without breathing a bene diction upon the beautiful town and the good people of Scotland Neck. The prestige of this section, given it by its wealth before the war the fabulons crops of its rich river lande; the intelligence and refinement of its people, from its earliest history to the present tirm; the energy of its business men now, and its unsur passed record for its health and the sobriety of the people, warrant the prediction that within the next de cade many who are seeking pleasant homes in a thriving locality, will turn their attention to this section; home capacity will be developed, and Scotland Neck will in a few years rank with the foremost sections of North Carolina in all that pertains to active enterprise in the trend of Southern progress. Food for the Mind. Ilaye something for the mind lo feed upon , something to look forward to and live for besides the round of daily labor or tha counting of profit aud loss . If you have not any talent for writing splendid works on j)o litical economy or social science, or the genius for creating a good story or a fine poem, the next best thing and, in fac al nost as good a thing is to possess an appreciation of these thing?. So have good books and good newspaper?, and read them, if only in snatches, and talk about them at dinner time or by the even in2 fire. Maimers. I make it a point of morality never td find fault with another for his manners. They may be awkward or graceful, blunt or polite, polished or rustic, I care not what they are, if the man means well and acts from honest intentions , without eccentric ity or affectation. All men have not the advantages of "good society," as it is called, to school themselves in all its fantastic rules and ceremon. iesj and if there is any standard of manner?, it is well founded on reason and good sense, and not upon these artificial regulations. Manners, like conversation, should be extemporane ous and not studied. I always ausr pect a man that meets me with the same perpetual smile on his face, the same bending of the body and the same premeditated shake of- the hand. Give me the hearty it may be roegh grip of the hand, the care less nod of recognition , and, when occasion requires, the homely but welcome salutation, ''How aro you, mv old friend V Malarial Fever is caused by Microbes. I get no pity from my friend?, but only sneers and sarcasm. What is a man to do in such a case?" Answer: Yoa deserve no pity in your maudlin "wearisome ness of life." You ought to be im pressed on board a man-of-w.tr and stirred up with a rope's end now and then. When a worn ont snob says he is ''weary of the world," he of coarse means the world which he lives and moves in and has never looked beyond. Pitiful fool that he L, life was never sofresb, so full of wholesome excite ment, so pregnant with the wonder ful a3 it ia now. In the days of the patriarchs, when science was net, and men walked the earth and fljat ld over the waters with eyes sealed to tha innumerable uses and powere of the material universe around them, it might have been excusable to complain of the monotony of hu man existence. Bat now, when al most every day is marked by some startling discovery or invention, when natural philosophy is disclos ing to us new heaven 3 and a new eartb, and every wonder revealed by scientific investigation points to grander marvels yet to bo developed, no man whose mind is not dead with in him can say that life lacks inter est.
