(Evening Visitor.) Fmdlay, O., July 17. A strange story is reported from the little vil lage of New Stark , in thi3 county, which, while probably explainable on reasonable grounds, causes the gen tleman who gave the particulars to the Herald correspondent much wor ry aid apprehension. This gentleman is Jacob Stonehill, who conducts a small undertaking business in the town where he lives. 1 1 13 stock of coflins occupies a room adjiniug his residence, which is also used as a workshop. A few weeks ago he went to Stark county and exhumed the remains of hi father, who was buried tbere. and brought them to New Stark to be re lnterred. They were enclosed in a strong metallic casket, which was placed in the undertaking until the details of the second funeral coald be arranged, and several days elaps ed before he attempted to enter the room where the remains were resting. When he attempted to do so he fouud the door was locked on the in side. This was astonishing, as no one had been in or about the apart ment since the casket had been plac ed there. The only way in which he could enter the room '.yas through a window. During tho next few days he made seven different attempts to gam an entrance into his shop, but always found the door locked on the inside. He inquired of every one around the premises, but could find no evid ence that anyone had interferred with the luck, or had even entered the apartment since the remains had been placed there. The strangest part of the story is yet to come. When Mrs. Stonehill went to the room with her husband it opened as soon as she pressed the latch, and hc was 'he only one to whom the door would yield. To the husband it was always locked, but to the wife the latch responded readily. The condition of affairs continued until the fcnrral of the elder Mr. Stone hill, since which the door has given no trouble. lii.fory 5Ieje;5t ll-clt". THE SECOND 3IOSES FOUND, (Washington Progress.) A mystery attcnels the finding of a young boy baby, of unknown parent age, some days ago aboot five miles from Edward's Mill, in this county. It was found in a basket by the road shlc, so we are informed. There were a twenty dollar bill, four cans of condensed milkthree changes of clothing and some medicine in the basket with the child . It was found by an old colored woman and taken to Lcr home, where it stiil remained, the last time we heard anything about it; though we understanel that a good citizen in the count said that he was going to take It to his home, name it Moses and make a good Democrat of it. Tho mystery is that no one scerns to have any knowledge as te how the child c-tme there. Kansas City, Mc. I have been alllicted with kidney trouble for over a yeear. CONNEEI.SVILLK, ALA , July 21, '00. , Editor Democrat : Perhaps it might interest some of the many readers of The Democrat to know something of the habits and customs of the people in and around the coal fields ol Alabama, also her mineral and farming resources. As yet, white immigration to Ala bama has been confined to the miner al regions and to the pineywoods farming section. A great niariy people have come fromGeorgia.theCarolinup, and Virginia, and have taken up the virgin land, and begun business from the jump on a lare scale. Hut the vast majority of the bi plantations are the results of patch work. Too pie from t he above Stale?, took up the land in forties, eighties , and hundreds, clcircd their field?, built their houses, and started Ui work to get rich. Some prospered faster than others, and their slaves multiplied more rapidly, and these bought out their poorer neighbors, thus the more successful remained behind to bei come large planters, while the others moved farther West to try it again in a virgin country. Perhaps some day this process will reverse itself, for already tbere are signs that the poorer people who have been for years passing through from the States of the Atlantic sea- board t Texas. Mississippi and stop on the rich, fertile and healthy lands of Southern Alabama. Down in Sumpter the experiment is being tried on a systematic plan. An agent is paid by the planters so much for every white immigrant he induces to come and rent or bay a portion of their plantations. The first installment consists of fifteen families from North Carolina. If it work3 well , as it doubtless will, there i3 no reason why it should not be come a steady evolution that small farmers from the older States will come in ami again divide up the great plantations from which their kinfolks were frozen out in the quarter of a century that precee leel the war, and with these facts it is quite certain ttiat Alabama will yet become one of the greatest farming states in the Union. No land upon which the sun ehincs possesses greater natural advantages in mineral resources than that of middle Alabama, but around her coal anel iron mines the disposition of the miners arc as a rale kept, un der the bonds of law, but often at critical times they exhibit their vacil lating, serf like animal instincts, a gluttonous mot, elirt eating, iik spitism or to use common sense langUHge sucking around the oilieiais of the company, one trying to cut do the other in trying to stick their tioses into some one else's business. I think this tendancy is to e de plored in this the 19th century when God's image should stand up in the light of day and act as a pan should and be an honor to his country. IIow can he when lie tramples on the best gift his Creator has confer ed on him, or trades it olffor a keg of beer. If the Mississippi river ran through here, this clement would walk in and be drowned in it. It would be a bless ing. Contaminating influences would thus be brought to an end. Most all the miners arc foreigners, and depend on one day's work for their support on the next, and still thoy will spend the last cent they iiave on carta tor a !riS3 (;f beer. tr when th;v do riot have a crust oi bread to eat. I am lai thev are not American?. for this clamp of people could have never gained our country's independ ence. Let them call themselves Union men, I can not or by any other name, sufiiee it to say their actions condemn their, and will do so until they form a determination to be men . Alabama's iron and co il Gelds are rich, and as new manufacturing establishments are being put up every day through out the whole state there is Tv ready sale and tin mand for her iron, and the millions of tons of coal that are being daily brought from the depth of the earth. Birmingham is the magic citv of the South, almost every day some new residences aro coxraencc-d, or the location of some industrial plant In calculating the possibilities, or rather the probabilities', o..e Is struck with tbe force of argument in favor of tho predictions that by the taking of the next census Birmingham will! have reached out ac i urawc in an the suburbs inside the city limits, and will have built upon all the interven ing groands. She has now an admitted popuU tion in the city of about 50.01)0 peo ple, and by taking in all the im mediate and surrounding sections she has not les3 thna 70.00'.'. In two or three years llessinier the sister city will have at least a popul ation of "0,000 son!.-, the magic city will theu have a population of 200, cOO. By that time the corporate limits will touch each other and then Abibama ct n boast of one of the greatest cities on earth. The probabilities would stagajc the mot sanguine. It is believed that, twenty miles of this fertile valley will in a few ear be one solid citv, and the present rate of building along the line warrants this opinion. Ail advantages are in her favor to make her the largest city in the South, and begin to encoach upon the largest cities in the North. In making theEe calculations the idea of Aritnmetical progression is ruled out, and figures are made on the plain, simple in ere. a so from year to year. As there is not another place in the world enjoying suvh rich resorces and valuable advantages it is hard to tell what her future destiny will be. Tne rapid growth of her manufacturing enterprises and the fast development of her mineral re sources and the utilization of her manJ' natural advauiiigea give proof m A 1 !.. 15. DuWKEL. State Chronicle, GJrowtli oi Soullicrn (..'itie. (New York Herald.) One of the most encouraging, as it is one of the most surprising results of the census returns, is the growth of Southern cities. We are prepared for surprises from the West. That is a new and rapidly growing section. Immigra tion from abro.d and from other parts of the country has contributed steadily and liberally to the swelling of its population. Hut in the South we have not look ed for any exceptional or striking advances in urban population. Such, iiowevcr, are now disclosed by the returns increases winch far sur pass those of many llourishingNorlh ern anel even Western towns.
