At last .Mr. Eh ringhaus invited Mr. Badger and Ar. Jones to breakfist with him on the morniDg they wsre to leave for Fer qoimane, where Mr, B. was to ad dress the people. Tue invitation was accepted, and their carriage was ordered to the residence of Mr. Enririghaus. When Badger and Mr. Jones entered tie house they were recieved with elegant courtesy and ceremony by Mr. E.and his household, who were society poeple. Mr .Badger, at a glance, took in the situation. Hail to the Chief, was shown iu every step from the well dressed waiter to t.hn lord of the manor. Breakfast was announced. The guests were escorted in. Mr. Badger was as siampd hi nlace of honor, a drilled servant jiirl, tidily attired, Blood near, gently withdrew the chair that Mr. Badger was about to accupy, iu nnlpr to rpliVP. him of the act of rpmnvinff and reulacinz it. The wail, and lamentation, not unmixed with cen sure, that arose ftom that household in which "Jane, Oh! Jane," frequent ly occurred, may be imangiced bat not described. Mr. Badger laid on the floor while the tumJ.t was ou for a moment, and when there was a lull, he lifted himself slowly from his undiguiQed position, upou his .a f . A prominent Northwestern Con gressman reached Washington re cently after a mouth's tour through the South. Said he : 'The prosperity of the South as tonishes me. I found that the i ir- mers are in much better condition in the South than in the Wesd; rb:it tberf is more contentment a mong th people: tb.it money pleutier and that the people live better than thev do in tho West. fhere is no comparing the condi tion of the poorer classes of agricul tural laborers in Minuesota, the Dakotas or Nebraska with the col ored men of the South. The color ed man receives satisfactory wages and has iilwayw plenty of whole some food at his command. He is also well sheltered. I found that 1 the right of the colored man to earn his living, to enjoy the fruits of his Industry was everywhere recogniz ed and defended in the South 1 was convinced that, in a case at law in a con it between a white man and a negro, a white jury would invariably give the benefit of the doubt to the negro. I found also that the negroes scarcely ever suffer for anything so long as their white neighbors have any thing to give, but at the same time I found a universal disposition among the white poeple against negroes hold ing office- or having control in any way in government affairs. This did not astonish me. it would be the same way in my State if the negroes attemped to rule. I un derstand it is the same way in the new Territory of Oklahoma, whoso population was recruited largely fiom radical Kansas.
