SIS AND OTnEU TEOI'LE'S. Mr. Hugh F. Murray died at bis home in Wilson on Thursday Aug. 20ih- lie was about 40 years old iri'I hel-l rank among the mot scholarly lawj era of the state. Rev. Dr. Thomas Hume of the State University, has made quite areputa tion at the New York Glenn Falls National Slimmer School of Lan ua2C3. His lectures have been 3 c- r.-ucii admired ana he has been cn nafi' for still more extensive work cexl summer. Things are getting a little waira about the cilices of the Aeics uwl QUwcuY and the Progressive Far ,,ifr. We can almost feel the beat Jown here. Cool off, gentle men; you are not helping democracy nor the alliance as much as you may think. ' The cheering reports of improve ment in the crops from virts of the state are rpite gi ; '.ng. We may rot now expect such a bounti f ui I crop as last year, but we may reasonably expect a fir crop if the 8;asons continue favorable un td the crops shall have matured. Miey Josie Iient, a highly respec table young milliner of Harcown, Ky. , was insulted by a colored man a few days pgo. lie followed her up and used unbecoming language to her. Next day she met him on the ttreetp, procured a pistol and shot him. She was arrested but re- leased on bail. We recently heard a gentleman of very extended observation and ni"Ch sense in every way say that in com paratively few years Eastern Caro lina will be one' vast truck farm, bringing in olmo3t fabulous sums of money every year, we oeiieve mere is much in the prediction. The State Chronicle of 23rd says ; "Rev, Morgan Latta (colored), i9 been North on a trip in the in terest of the colored department of the Southern Exposition. He say9 that many Northern people are com ing: clown. One Ee:ublie.m in Philadelphia said to him: 'T am coming down to see how whitas and blacks are sUl getting on together,' Morgan replied: 'Well, you must come down and you will see that we live together in psree."' It begins to look like there will bo a chance for the republicans by the next election. Doubtless Uiey are even- now laughing in their eleeve at the grow ing discontent among the masses. And if the now apparently dsscoi- ! dant elements do not harmon:ze the republicans will revel in pohticial c!oer at the next general election. The management of the Southern Exposition has set apart the week from October 5th to 10th as news paper week. The newspapers of the South are accredited the compliment of having done much more for the development of the Southern States than any other irfluecce. It is, there fore, thought right that they should have some special recognition. Prominent men of both Southern and Northern press will be present. Governyr Holt says thy L he thinks by the first of January all of the four hundred thousand of the direct land tax will be called for. That will leave the twenty-Gve thousand ap propriation for the World's Fair just about as we said two weeks ago it would be non eit. Governor Holt thinks that liberal subscriptions from individuals is the only plau now. We fear that our showing at Chicago will be quite poor. A dispatch dated R"leigh, Aug. 21t, says: "John C Williamson. one of the leading negro politicians of this State, member of the Leg i dature and editor of the llaleiih Banner, propo es to run for Congress next year on a unique plitforra. It contains one plank , as follows: That Congress provide for the ayment, it the rate of $3"0 per head, of the 5,000,000 slaves set free by the late var, 200 of this amount to be paid to the owner of each slave, or his heir?, and $LC0 to each freed man 01 his hdra. It wi'l take $1,200,000 000 to do this, and Williamson pro poses to supply the funds by issuing 'd per cent, fifty year bords to thai mount.'' U. S. Go yvt Report, Aug. 17, 1889. map NEWSY 'GRAPHS. HERE AND ELSEWHERE WISE AND OTHERWISE. Mr. E. N. Nelon hs improved his place by adding to Lis tou-e in front. The gentle rains are fine for the crops during these extremely hot days. Sold ouc. M... The Raanoke Union of the Tar River Baptist Associa tion will be in session this week at Daw son's. The meetinz will morning and will close Sunday nigh; - x - - r Rev. R. E. The Rocky .Mount Argovaut says of Vine Hill acade mj: "It is the oldest incorporated acad emy in the i-tate, and ' flers exctptiona au vantages to those I. ,ing daughters to whom they wish to give a thorough ed ucation. Ne'vv laI's The town commissioners have put in quite a number of new lamps on the vanous streets and the lights are improved. The new lamps giye good lights and all the lamps are kept burn ing all night now instead of being put out at 11 o'clock. CLEA.N THE PREMISES. There is nothing more important during this wet season than keeping clean the premise?. Lime ought to be used freely and every precaution possible against sickness. It costs very little to use some disinfectants and it might save a large doctor's bill! or even life. A map of Winston. We are under obligations to Mess. Amis & Scott, real estate agents of Winston, for a map of mston-Salem mailed to us since our return. It now eraces tho walls of our oflice and our friends may get a bin 's eye view of Winston-Salem by dropping in and looking at it. No annual dinner. Mr. Noillect Smith President o" the Reunion Associas tion of the Scotland Neck Confederate Ycterans, infernos us that the annual reunion will not take place this year. He did what he could to get up enthusi asm for the reunion an 1 annual dinner, but just at the time he made the effort prospects were quite poor and the pecs pie seemed slow to move. It is now so near the business season that he will net make further ellort. A dastardly peed, Last Friday n-ght some one shot into Mr. W IT Bell's dwelling, the ball passing through the window and gracing the wall on the other side. Investigation was at "once made and supicion pointed to a colored man named Limus Iliggs. His wire was in the house and it was thought ha was shooting it her. He was arrested and tried Saturday before Justice W. II. Shields, but proved an alibi, The shoot ing occurred just after dark and caused seme excitement. Persons concerned are not yet salMie 1 about the matter and further investigation will probably be made. Ceitiinly one who wilfully shoots into a man's dwelling ought to be brought to justice, and we hope it will be done yet. Vorlt Will Noon Itegin. A party of about thirty gentleman and ladies who were in surf-bathinsj were gradually and unawares carried dowrt along the beach by the undercurrent un til a number of them were draVn into a slue or gully, from which it was with dilliculty they escaped or were rescued. There was a good assembly of spcta tors on th shore, and Capt Harney, of Edentou, who was among them, threw a line to one of the swimmers nearest the shore, and he succeeded in getting It to those most endangered, who were about 150 yards from shore. Two of the ladies. Miss Mattie Badham of Edenton, and Miss Kate Alberston, daughter of Judge Albertson, of Elizabeth City, who were rescued respectively by Messrs. Thos. Olds and Chas. Martin, of the same cities came the nearest to being drowned. Con si lerable ellort was necessary to resus citate them on part of Pr McMullen, a visiting physician, aided by Messrs. Simmons, Wreinburger, Abbott and Jack, officers of Revenue Cutler Winona, whose knowledge of what should be done on such occasions enabled them to ren der valuable assistance. Nearly every lidyandsome of the gentlemen weie completely exhausted. Mattresses were brought from the cottages to the beach for them to rest on until they rallied. P.
