True, Mother has had her day, dears, When you vere her babies three. And she stepped about the farm and the house As busy as ever a bee. When she rocked you all to slsep, dears, And sent you all to school. And wore herself out, and did without, And lived by the golden rule. And so your turn ha3 come, dears, Her hair u growing white, And her eyes are gaining the far away look That peers Deyond the night. And father, tired, lonesome then, Tray, what will you do for him? Ifyouwantto keep your mother You must make her rest today; Must give her a share in the frolic, And draw her into the play. And, if mother would listen to me, dears, She'd buy her a gown of silk, With buttons of royal velvet, And ruflies as white as milk. Editor Democrat : To you and others who feel an in terest in the build'Dg up of enter prises in the SJoutb, and especially in rsorth Carolina, a visit to this place would be one of special interest. The work of tbe canal, projected by capitalists of New York, I'ennsylva nia, Virginia and North Carolioa, progresses. Dr. Ilerndon, of Oxford, and Maj T. L. Emrr, of Weldon, are two of the largest stockholders in this State. It is only four miles from Weldon, and notwithstanding the season of the year, the roacts are in good con dition. LAUOKKKS KMl'LO Yt?I. Near tie bridge between the two canals (tbat are very near each other at this point) a large steam mill U actively at work, converting los of timber into plank, sills, &c, for building purposes. Passing the mill a few yards and ascending a slight ninence, you come in sight of an animated scene. From tbis point not onl' the saw mill and its opera. tions are in full view, but a number of men felling trees and cutting logs, numerous others with mules and carts removing iarge pieces of rock from the hed of tbe canal; still others with muleo hitched to scrapers bear ing oil tbe dirt from tbe hill aides. These are free laborers. There are also in plain view, some- wbst removed from the others all along in tbe channel of the canal for a considerable distance, about ona hundred convicts with wheel harrows removing the dirt and smaller rock ; while others with large sledge ham mers are driving steel into the larger boulders of rock, striking with the reanlarity of clock work, making re ceptacles for powder and dynamite There also may be seen tbe Civil En gii.eer, and his assistants, moviDg here and there adjasting tbe work, driving stakes, &c. THE CONVICT GUAVfDS. In view and at different points are the guards witb their Mulligins and 1G shooters, the least animated, but not tbe most uoimportant of those in sight, for In the force of convicts here, are some of the most desperate men in the State. In charge of the forces at work is Mr. E. M. Wheeler a man of considerable experience in work of the kind. Maj. T. L; Emrp is to be seen here almost daily , and for the time being he seems to be giving this enterprise the most of his time and attention. DIRECTORS OF THE WORK. Mr. Wheeler has as assistants in managing and directing the hands, Mess. A. A. Gross, Mr, Burns, D. K. McKePver, W. -J. Simmons and Mr. Hritt. All except tbe last two mentioned have bad long experience in rock work , and the use of powder and dynamite, aud their skillful use of it is attested by the immense quantity of work that has beea and is daily being removed, and the fur ther fact, that although the work has been progressing for months there has not been the slightest accident. The heavy blasts are heard for miles around this section. If you will listen almost every day, a lit tle after 12 o'clock, when the " hands bsve left tbe work fur dinner, and again a little after sun set, you can no donbt hear them to your town. Mr. A. Edwin Lehman of Philadel phia, a gentleman of considerable reputation 'n bis profession, is con suiting engineer, and Mr, George M. Lehman is president engineer. To the president engineer, I am indebt te i for the following facts. ABOUT THE CANAL : The e.inal will re a little oer two roiie? in Knth, 'JO feet wide st t.oj , sixty feet wide at bottom, 34 leu ftu, with a hore power estimattd at oH-r 7,000. Ihere is a natural canal on a portion of It foroed by an k laud that averages about 300 feet in width, iwobuudred acres of land will be covered- for manufacturing enterprises, all of which is flit and dry. THE ELEVATION . The locality selected for tbe man ufacturing town is one hundrtd and Qve feet higher than Weldon, four miles distant. This may seem a little strange to tome of jour read er?, but they fhouli remember that this is in the vicinity of where lb Great Fail of tt Roanoke com menc. MK H TIMBER, company uwns over 2,700 The acres of land around Great Falls, much of which well timbered with oak, hickory , poplar, beech, and other floe timber. NATURAL ADVANTAGES. With rock plentiful for foundations and timber convenient, with mojt excellent clay for making brick, (an enterprise that will be started as soon as tbe season will permit, tbe wood beiDg already cut and on hand for the purpose it looks as if nature -had placed in eay ;eacb nearly all of tbe material that h nee essary to improve and build up tbis place. Anil it only needs the com bination of capital and energy to de velop it, and tbis has now been happily blended. Capital of Hself is sometimes disappointing in its re suits in great enterprise", but when combined with the Indomitable will power and energy of such men as W. M. Habliston, and Chas. Cohen, of Petersburg and T. L. Emry, of Weldon, who are tbe contractors on this work, to those who know tbem, it is not surprising that this great work is going forward in a manner, that is exceedingly gratifying to ev ery one tbit bcps it, ard who desires Lie material interest of our section developed. MAMMOTH ENTERPRISE. A "entletnan from the western part of the state who is well inform ed about what is going on in the state, remarked to mc a few days ago, that there was no enteprise within its limits now in progress equal to it. And although he had heard much about it, he had no con ception of i's magnitude and capa bilities until be visited it. This is the invariable decision of every one who sees it. CARE OK THE CONVICTS. Mr. J. M. MeMurry is the super visor of tbe convicts here. He deals with them with great firmness, but is humane, and looks closely after tbeir comfort. Their cleanly appear ance, warm clothing and sprightly looks, give evideoce of this- Dr. J. L. Ivey is the physician at the camp, and looks after tbe health of its iDmates. HEALTH OF THE FL VCE. As an evidence of tbe health i f th,i3 section, convict working on the canal 'of the : "Roirioke '"Navigation and W.-ter Pow'er company as well as that of Great Falls, have he'eri encamped in this vicinity for nearly two years. r .. THEY .COME from every portion of the state, with officials in charge ol them supervi sors, guard?, ana those who worked tbe hands. Many of whom came from the mountain?,, appreheusivu aa to tbeir health. And although, from the nature of the work, they have been rxpo ert in mud and water, to th hot sun of summer, and to the cold (if winter, there has only been one death iuce the camts were first established in this viciniU , tbat of a convict who was sick when he arrived at camp. Could there be a more thorough test than this as to the health of this section? Mr. Lehman of Per. nsj lvanin who has been engaged here about a year, aod who owing to his duties, has heen much exposed, says that he has found this locality exceedingly healthy and delightful. THE SCENERY. The work is low progressing in a tend of tbe river, Immediately through high hills, suriounded by the rco-t beautiful and romantic sc'n'r to bo tet n in Eastern Carolina, Numbers of person hae ben here, who have seen the western portions of Carolina and Virinis, and they express themselves aston isbed at such views and scenery in this part of the state. The Roanoke Nhv Ration and Water Power Com pany have on tbeir canal in a few Dundred ards of this canal at the 'locks" a wstfr power which is said to be equal to the entire water power at Richmond, Va. This is in close proximity to the l-.nds that an be'ng laid off by the Great Falls Company in town lots, streets &c. RAILROAD FACILITIES. The Seaboard Air Line system, extending from Portsa-outh.
