HILL AND CLEVELAND In this issue we print Dr. G. K Matthews' article on Mr Cleveland. We have printed aiticles written, in the interest of Mr Hill; and as wo have no personal preference, but only wish to fee the democrat nom inated who can wm, we give space to the claims of both as set forth bv their fi lends. Some months ago we said in thfse ch-umns that we did not think it expedient for the pait.y to nomi nate either Cleveland or Hill, and from the bitterness that is growing o:it o! t he tight, we are more than ear convinced that the democratic putv needs some out else besidts Hiil or Cleveland lor the presiden tial nominee. It t te bitter tight between the friends of the two men coutinues up to the nominating couventioD, it will be woith nothing to nomi nate either one of them. T ' . 1 . 1 i niess mere can oe some lecou. ciliution between rh friends, or we might say enemies, of Hill and Cleveland before the convention or in t he convention, it will be impos sioie ioi tne paity to elect either one. There is no piotiori about the fact that both of t::e men have a strong following in the party, and it will not do lor the party to sacn lice itself in a factional jealousy for either of them. Both Hill and C evelaud ought to withdraw. Tuis is our opinion, though we may be ti el i or. Slice wining the foregoing, wo have read in the Wilmington Alex n -.; .-v. a letter by Col. Wharton J ( liven, ex-Congressman, and a lite long democrat. He addresses his letter to Mess. Hill and Cleveland and we uive the closiug paragraph, with which our burner position a. r e : "Viewed even horn the friendliest of standpoints, the nomination o either impors the defeat ol the paity. A WORD FOR CLEVELAND. Etrfitur Democrat: It is but just to ex-President C'evelaud to say that a large part ol the masses of the people ate w.th him regardless of abuse; for tbey see a man who has convictions of his own and whoso statesman ship, patriotism and intellectual capacity challenge admiration from every source. Ami so far as broad st atesmansuip arm patriotic irn onlses go to make up a man fit for the preidency, David B. Hill and Gsover Cleveland need not be mentioned in the same connection. The admirers of Mr. Hill will have the aooduess to admit that there are other question which pertain to the office of President besides such as these. Mr. Hill has nver learned anything about the tirifTor the currency or any Other ecouornieal or political question while hustling with Piatt for the control of New York, and his delphic aud contradictory utter- ancos on these issues, show that whenever he gets out of New York he is lost iq a wilderness of ideas which be cannot understand. Mr. Hill is just now being lioniz- ed by a number of people who measure his stafcsmauship, genius, and every thing else by the deeep- tive test of his success as a New York politician. Mr. Cleveland, a statesman of a high order, stands the embodiment of all that constitutes greatness and grandeur of character, pif fening rather to be "right then President," and as has fceen said, lFeriecS to plan and bold to execute. Intrepid upright bold and resolute, The naii ns friend, the peof fe's advacate, Knowing no North no South, section or State; Selt-poieu, his guiding star the n?ht, He questioned not the watchman of the night; But blazed his way, truth his unerring guide, And fell at last, still on ihe people's fide" Anil as one loving the tight, despising trickery, deceit and hero worship, which has in the minds of some made Hill omnipotent and infallible, I would say this much for one who has proved himself a utover of f-trenght,' and gave the ; CL,nut v a cIear aod ab,e adaiiuistra. i f,n.. f nnbti.. atrira r" Hingwood, March 1, 'UU. If the tax, or duty, WA8 levied on the goods and prodoc tious of this country as well as on those imported we should collect at leaet $2,000,000,000 of revenue, in hD - tead of $200,000,000 as we now Mow what becomes of the ditter- Jence between the two hundred mil Hons and the two billion dollars? Ti difference ifl one billion eight hundred million of dollars, enough pay off the national debt and pay aj the expwea of a republican ad nvnietratiia tor one year. W ell, the email difference between thtse two amounts, which ia only eighteen hundred millions of dollars, instead of remaining in the pockets of the American people yearly, goes d iwd into the pockets of the manu facturers as the result of that damnable and infamous system put in practice by the republican party and known as the piotective system. I assert ft with co.nQdence in its truthfulnese, that the South has paid under this system of taxation since 1865 into the pocket- of Northern monopolists, in the form of enhanced prices by reason of the tiuty, more than four times the present asseesed value of all the property, both real and personal in the South. I will go farther and say if every fami,y in the South (Mrt orlb' Ea8t and West) had paid oyer to them to morrow all the mocey they have paid a i a bounty to Northern robbers and Ponderers since the war, each fami ly wouM nave lod8 nPn au Bver'ireceived a communication from age more than they have-ten thoue- and dollars ready cash, however Pr now The protectiorists say that a tariff duty , or tax, on importation reduces the prices of manufactared goods in this country. If that be true then how is anyone protected? If the prices of manufactured goods are re duced and the owner of the goods is compelled to sell for less money, how is he protected ? The only way he can be protected is to increase the price of his goods. How can the price of his goods be increased? Cer- jtainly not by removing all tariff du- ties, or taxes on the importation f foreign goods. This would ellow goods to come into this country from tbe hands of the so called, foreign iabor of all Europe on an eqaal foot- jDg an(i ,n competition with home maAo KOods. This would drive prices down in thirty-six houre, and the protectionists claim would close every factory in the land. Then how are they protected by the tariff? Of course by keeping out foreign goods from competing with home made goods, thereby keeping op home prices to the maximum; that is, adding the tariff or near the amount of the tariff to the goods manufactured in this country. For instance, the actual tax collected on sugar imported into this country was about $50,000,000. The removal of the duty, or lax, saved to the consumers of sugar in this country exactly fifty millions of dollars per year Now suppose wool and woolen goods were put on V e free list, we would save to the con sumer? of woolen goods of all kinds forty-five millions of dollars annuals ly, and in addition to this amount saved, we would save to these same consumers the enhanced price of ah woolen ood3 rcr.de i- this country, which would re more th:n two hua dred and fifty millions of dollars to be added lo tLc forty -five millions, making a elear s&viug to the cousqiu ers of woolen goods offdl kinds or two hundred and ninety-five millions of dollars annually. Are not these little amounts worth saving yearly lo the paple, which wheu all added iu sure of about $1, 800,000,003 of mor.ey? enough if saved for oid Gve years in succession to arroir t to $'.,000y 0,000, more than tu-e the asseesv ed value of all the pro,rt7 in the South of every kini. It is said that he was one of the best editoral writers the state has ever had, and lie was perhaps one of the most successful journalists the state has had. To be sure, he had known much of political strife, but. bis later years were .-pent in retirement, aud his closing years were crowned with a bright christiau experience. Mr. Editor In your pper of a recent date there appeared over the name of Bro. W. C. Wbitaker a call Tor a county convention of Sunday school workers to meet at Halifax, Feby. 29th. wo were among the nua.ber who responded, and we feel sure there were none present at the nuet- ing wno Know or tne existence oi a county S. iS. organization. The contention was organized on the 29th and we were elected chairman & secretary by the meet ing Sin e the publication of the proceeding in your paper we have Bro. H. E. S?iers of Weldon turning over to us certain blanks, prograrnce, &o and stPting that he was secretary of the county S. S. Convention last year. This was a revelation to up, as we knew nothing whatever of an existing county S. S. organization and we now find ourselves placed iu het role of supplantcrs, a position we are quite unwilling to occupy. We hereby repudiate the action of tbe meeting of tbe 29th ult. and call upon the proper officers of the ex isting organization to take such action as will best serve to develop the S. S. work in the county. L. G. Gkaiv. Julias Gilliam. Ueatnfkk Can't be Cured by local applications, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear.
