The extreme cold of last week caused editor Roscower of of the Goldsboro Headlight to exclaim; The Sunny South seems to be on the pomt of discovering the north pole?" Pretty good shoats. Mr. Albert House killed three shoats not quite ten months old which weighed 500 pounds. This is pretty ecod weight for shoats of that age Much moving. There has been a great deal of moving in the country gen-, eraljy. Many persons are changing places on farms and other places. Al most every day wagon are sen carrying property and families in different direc tions where they begin work for a new year. Care for the Poor. In tbi ex tremely ca!d weather and continued snow and ice, it would b-i a great wonder if there were not some persons in the com munity who need help in clothes and fuel and supplies. The people of Scotland Neck and community have long been not ed for their charity, and The Democrat takes great pleasure in making this obser vation of the true spirit of Christianity ir. our people as shown in broad and liberal charity. We are confident that if there are any in need of help that it has only to be made known to our people and re lief will soon be given. Unpretentious but puke - A gen tleman of unusual intelligence and a read er of The Democrat for a number of vears, in a private letter to the editor pays the paper the following highly appreciated compliment. 'Notwithstanding tbe stringency m money matters, 1 cannot afford to let the paper stop. While I receive several papers of wider circulation and mor pretentious claims, I receive none more faithfully and honestly edited and whose columns are freer from corrupting senti ment and vulgar slang. My children are beginning to read newspapers, so you see f must be particular as to the char acter of the sheets that fall into their hands." Swiftly gliding. The old time fun of skating on the ice has been much en joyed by those who skate of late. Sev eral days last week parties went out from town to Smith's mid and crjoyed them selves some in skating with the ease ut the long ago ?nd some in learning for tile first time to nov l:van-like" over tb ice and enjoyed the fun of trying it again after every tumble. It has been a long time since there has been ice enough here for skating. It may be a long timG before we have another such winter (everybody hopes it will be) so let the skaters have all the fun the' can while the ice ii on. Is the characteristic of JJood's Sarsapa -rilla, and it is manifested every day in the remarkable cures this medicine ac complishes. Druggists say; When we sell a bottle of Hood's Sarsaparilla to a new custouiar we are sure to see him back in a few weeks after more, prov ing that the good results from a trial bottle warrant continuing its use. This positive merit Hood's Sarsaparilla pos sesses by virtue of the Peculiar Com bination, Propor.on and Process used in its preparation, and by which all the remedial yalue of the ingredients used is retained. Hood's Sarsap&rilla is thus Peculiar to Itself and absolutely une quejled in its power as a blood purifier, andr.as a tonic for building up the weak ana weary, and giving nerve stiength. CORRESPONDENCE. FROM KING WOOD. "Coldest weather in 40 years and long est pprll of it," is what the oldest in habitants ay. liirda and r&bbiu are freezing and perishing, no work can be done and travel is impeded. Mr. T. A. Spivey, Ur twehe weeks confined to his bed, is slowly recovering. Ex-Repiesentative T. U. Taylor has been kept in two or three weeks ith an attack of grippe, but will be out again when the weather opens. I have heard some unfavorable com ment on the action of the legislature i.-i appropriating o0 for the Inauguration. "$150 for ba' I music should be paiu by the dancers, as 4tho?e who danre should pay the harpers' h an old axiom," tay those of "ur voters whom I have heaic ppeak of it, though they may be "ratan spirited and btingy" as said some of the speakers when the matter was bein. discussed. True it is a small matter, as they said, but economy and lower taxes were prem ised and the voters are hard presssd and can hardly pay their raxes now, and they say they w&ot nothing that looks like useless expenditure of public money to pass. All I have heard speak of the public printing are in favor of giving it to Capt. Ashe of the News & Observer. The peo ple believe the State would have betn saved 2,000 or mere if it had been awarded him before a', the price he pro posed to take the contract. I merely note the foregoing as expressions of some of our intelligent citizens. Jan. 21st. G. E. M. FROM LEW IS i ON The year 1893 is upon us with consid erable fnow and intensely cold weather, causing much suffering among the poor. We have had about thirty inches of suow smce the 2Gth of December last, and the mercury registered as low as 2 decrees below zero this morning, which i the lowest yet. There is great demand, for wood, and laborers who depend on their daily labor for a living are in straightened circum stances. No work of any kin-i has been done .since Christmas. Merchants are deing but little mure than sit by the stove and keep fires for lofers. Trie ire houses have been clogged with icd from the creeks, which was frozen to the thick ness of eight and nine incbes. Roads ?ie so frozen that but little travel can be done and has stopped almost evert body except the inevitable drummer and, those preparing for marriage. We learu that one young man of our neighborhaod will get married next Tuesday. Mis. Rosa Hoiton, wifeo! Doctor E H. Horton, died here on the 18th. She was a most estimable lady and her death is greatly lamented by her frunds and neighbors. She leaves three small chil dren.
