It will make your letter heads and wrappers look as though you had all the trade you want. Again, if you wish to boom your town, first starve the editor out or compel him to dress so that the rents and ravels of his coat and trousers will play a tune to the gentle touch of the northern breeze, and when he is seen perambulating around neighboring towns in quest of support it will at once be recognized that he hails from a thor oughly wide awake business point." Dont suffer from dyspepsia. Take Simmons Liver Regulator. It always "How to g;-t Mnliwcriber." The Gastonia Gazette keeps after the editor of the Henderson Gold Leaf to give advanced sheets of his essay on how to get suosenbers. Bro. Manning gives this hiat at his essay: "Yes, brother Marshall shall have our plan- It is this; Publish a news paper that everybody wants and will take when a suit of clothe-, grand piano, or a cabinet organ goes with every subscrip tion But as 'none but the wealthy (pub lishers) can afford it,' we fear our plan will not help the Gazette man much." The plan knocks the props clean from under Bro. Marshall who confesses as follows: " That settles it. We shall have to let herjogalooga while longer with the same old list. How Sie took lfi Count. (Lewiston Evening Journal.) A neat illustration of the value of saga cious advertising was given at the Ports land Young Men,s Christian Association, meeting Sunday. General Secretary Mc Donald stated that he had some curiosity to know what method of advertising reached the most people- He had circu lated thousands of little dodgers, giving notice of the meeting, and he asked those who bad seen them, and had been moved to come through that means, to rise. The hall was packed as full as it could hold, and of the entire number about fifteen arose. Then Mr. McDonald asked all who had read the notice in the news papers and had been influenced by them to rise, and the frowd rose in a body. Forest Anniversary. The Kinston Free Press has been un der its present uianaieiuent for seven years. It is one of the largest and most aggressive and interesting weeklies in the State Among thd weeklies of the State the Free Press ranks next to the ctates ville Landmark. The Henderson Herald is anew semi weekly published in Hendtrson by Mess. Newell & Thacker. It is a six-c dumn sheet and is quite handsome in appear ance. The New Berne Daily Currnc by Mess. R. R, and J. B. Hill is a new paper. It comes to our office daily , is a hand some six-column sheet and shows good management. Rev. Nylvanus Lane Of the Cincinnati M. E. Conference, makes a good point whon he says: We hay e for years used Hood's Sarsaparilla in our family of five, and find it fully equeal to all that is claimed for it. Some people are greatly prejudiced against patent medicines, but how the patent can hurt a medicine and not a machine, is a mystery of mysteries to me." Dowell of WilUamston pre-.hei in the Baptist church from EccleMibtes 9:11: 'kl returned, and saw un icr the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, neith er vet brt-ad to tEe wise, nor yet favor to men of skill; but time and chance happenth to them all." The 6ermon wag an ab!e and instruc tive one, showing that many mysteries and dealings of God with the children of men, while not understood by men, work out the glory of God and the good of men. Mr Dowell is well known here and the people are alwayft glad to see him and delighttd to hear him preach. The sermon Sunday was pronounced by many as being able and strong .nd full ot instruction to all and of consola tion to christians especially. Rev. J. E. White of Wilson preached Sunday night from I Cor. 10: 4 "For the? drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them :and that Rock was Christ" Mr. White is a young man of great abil ity and is especially fluent m speech. The Rock is Christ, and is a source of power to Christians as a perennial stream of supplying grace; as a city of refuge; as a shelter from the storm. The sermon was beautiful and instructive and elicited the praise and commendation of the auaience. Owing to the very in clement weather the audience was small, but quite attentive. Mr. White is one of the youngest Bap tist ministers in the State and is fast risiDg and bids fair to become one of the denomination's leading mn. Scrofula, whether hereditary or ac quired, is thouroughly expelled from the blood by Hood's Sarsasaparilla, the great blood purifier. Money to Loan. Through the efforts of Mr. J. T. Pats rick of the Southern Immigration Bureau an opportunity has been made by which our citizens can borrow money on easy terms for improving the town either by erecting dwellings and stores or for aid ing indnstrial enterprises. The Atlantic Saving and Loan Association of Syracuse, N. Y., has established a Southern Agen cy at Southern Pines with George Allen of North Carolina as manager, and a branch office can be placed nere if our citizens desire it and will take the prop er steps to have it done. Do we need any more money in new enterorises? The Democrat thinks we do. Shall we have it? Warn it intentional? Sunday's New York Herald contained a beautiful editorial article on "Our Dead" It spoke of Lowell, Whittier, Curtis, Brooks, Hayes, Butler and Blaine. The tribute was a beautiful one, but the gap which it showed by leaving out the name f the great Lamar of the South marred the beauty very much. Was it intentional? The State Chronicle, commending ou O ot, KiUhirs's speech in the con tested easo hiiiweeu W.W.Long and I. II. Wright f Wprren says : "His speech was logical ?.nl respon sive to the issue. Walter Henry has written a letter to tue Heudersou Gold Leaf which is highly eulogistic of Editor Henry Blount, who will soon commence a lecturing tour in North Carolina. With reference to Southern talent, Mr. Henry says: "I wish to say also that in justice to their sons and daughters, tLr people of North Carolina and the outh. ought no Jonger to wait for lecturers to some to them from New York and the NortD but tbey ought to recognize, encourage, and reward the talent and genius at their own doors. The South to day has but little literature, because her sons and daughters have not been encourag ed and sometimes we are forced to the conclusion that that appre elation of scholarship and brillian cy in le'ter, that was once one oi tlu1 glories of the South, has ben :araized lv the base materialism of the age Such, hovrt er, is the fame and poorer ol Henry Blount there is no doubt ne wiil be greeted by large audiences everywhere."
