THE DEMOCRAT. E. E. HILLIARD, - - - . Editor. Published Every Thursday. THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, '1)4. Entered at the Post-Office at Scotland Neck, iY. C, as Second Clou Matter. FROM THE BUCK-EYE STATE. Srnoic.u. HoTKr.. Cou miu s, Ohio, Dec. lb, !&.)?, Editor Democrat: Thinking that perhaps a few notes from this section might he of interest - to your readers, f take the liberty (hav ing abundant opportunity) to write. Leaving home on Monday, Dec. 11th, Mr. Edmondsjon and mvself went to Norfolk via Weldon. Immediately upon our arrival in Portsmouth we went on board the steamer "Georgia," whose appointments seem perfect. Arriving in Baltimore the following morning we were immediatelv trans ferred to Camden Street station where we were informed that our train would not leave until 7 :!.", p. m. Rut by having our tickets changed so as to go by Pittsburg we left at 10 :lf,a. m. We made only a short stop in Wash ington and pulled out for the "Smoky City." The scenery was simply grand, especially after we reached Harper's ; Ferry, where we entered the valley of Virginia. For miles and miles we ran along the river or canal. At Harper's Ferry a gentleman came on board and the cars leing crowded I shared my seat with him. We were soon in conversation and I learned that he was Senator Fauikner,of W. Ya. Ho was very entertaining and spoke in quite complimentary terms of our own Zeb Vance. After leaving Martins burg, we began to get into tire-coke re- ' gion and we passed through town after town filled with coke ovens, and the .road seemed almost in a light blaze. And as we neared Pittsburg the whole .elements were illuminated by fires from coke ovens and iron furnaces. It being 1) o'clock when we arrived in Pittsbnrg v.e did not see any of the city. I did not see a saw mill or a 'stalk of cotton after we left Norfolk. Coke ovens, coal mines, stone quarries and wheat fields met the gaze in every direction from Washington to Pittsburg. The remainder of our run being at night we saw nothing of interest. We arrived here at 5 o'clock, a. m., Dec. 13th, and came directly to our present quarters, the Surgical Hotel. And although we came up at such an hour we found everything at hand to make us comfortable. The institution is kept open day and night, presided -over by Dr. Hartman, who has a corps of able assistants. Each one is a spe cialist and expert in his line. It is the most quiet and home-like place I have ever seen. The weather has been rather inclement since we arrived, con sequently I have seen but little of the city. The State Capitol is a grand struct, ure, mausoleum like with but little pretention to architectural beauty. The "grandest buildings I have seen are the custom house and post office. Some of -the private business blocks are fine as also are some of the churches. Snow is falling, but it is no colder here than it is usually in Scotland Neck at this season. When I can get out I will write again J. Y. Savage. Prevention Is Better Than cure, and those who are subject to rheumatism can prevent attacks by ? keeping the blood pure and free from jthc acid which causes the disease. You can rely upon Hood's Sarsaparilla as a remedy for rheumatism and catarrh, also for every form of scrofula, salt rheum, boils and other diseases caused by impure blood. It tones and vital izes the whole system. Hood's Pills are purely vegetable. About a year ago I took a violent at tack of la grippe. I coughed day and night for six weeks ; my wife then sug gested that I try Chamlerlain's Cough Remedy. At first I could see no differ ence, but still kept taking it, and soon found that it was what I needed. If I got no relies from one dose I took an other, and it was only a few days until I was free from the cough. I think people in general ought to know the value of this remedy, and I take pleas ure in acknowledging the benefit I ha.ve recefved from it. Madison Mustard, Otway, Ohio. 25 and 50 cent bottles for sale by E. T. Whitehead & Co. Drug gist. The persistent cough which usually follows an attack of the grip can be jer jnanently cured by taking Chamber lain's Coughh Remedy. W. A. Mc Guire of Mc Kay, Ohio, says : "La Grippe left me with a severe cough. After using several different medicines .without relief, I tried Chamberlain's Cough Remedy, which effected a per manent cure. I have also found it to 1 without an equal for children, when troubled with colds or won p. 25 and f0 cent littles for sale by E. T. Whife- TAJUiOItfr. STEADY IMPROVEMENTS. New Baptist Church Dedicated. The editor of The Democrat sj-ent three days in Tarboro last week in at tendance ujon the JJaptist Union Meet ing held in the new IJaptist church. Tarboro is well known for the culture and refinement of its people and their hospitality equals their culture and re finement. The town is one of the most nourishing and prosjerou- in Eastern Carolina and - all the while shows marks of steady improvement. Within the past few years the streets have leen greatly improved, many handsome buildings have Ixen erected and the town shows much jiermanent and well-directed general improvement. Being the county-seat of Elgecomle, one of the best counties in the State, and having a back country that is not surpassed anywhere in the State, Tar boro lias every advantage to make it pros;icrous, and it is not slow to lav hold of every opportunity that presents itself. Among the most attractive new im provements is the town hall which isvery go and handsome, and one does jk t pass it without being struck by its jro portions and finish as well as its advan tageous location. THE H ATTEST ClH I.TII. The Baptist Union Meeting was held in the new Bapti.-.t church, which in many resjects is perhaps the hand somest church in the State and at the same time has appointments that are not surpassed by any church of any de nomination in North Carolina. The church was planned and largely built and equipped by the late (. C. Farrar, who spent considerable time and money in visiting the best appointed churches North from which he might get a mod el for his own. The time was appoint ed for its dedication some three years ago, but the illness at the time and the unexpected death of Mr. Farrar, upon whom rested the most of the obligation to raise the money to pay the last debt, rendered it necessary to defer the dedi catory services until the debt should be met by other arrangements. Under the wise and skillful leadership of Dr. J. I). Hufham, who has been the pastor for more than two years, the money has been raised and the new church was dedicated to the Lord on last Sundav. On Friday the Roanoke Union of the Tar River Association met in the church and held session two days. During the session a number of impor tant questions were discussed, among which were The Duty of Individuals to the Church ; The Importance of building Houses of Worship on Mission Fields; Tlie New Testament Church and its Mission : Religious Revival what it is and is not ; The J 'lace of Denominational Colleges in the Edu cational work of the State. DEI) I OA TO R V SER VICES . Dr. Hufham extended an invitation to the Sunday-schools of the town to attend a Sunday-school mass meeting on Sundav morning, and the Sunday- schools from the Presbyterian and Methodist churches, with the pastors of those churches, were present. After a Sunday-school meeting, pre sided over by Rev. 1). MeLeod, of Wash ington, and for which Rev. Mr. Massey, pastor of the Methodist church of Tar boro, was the principal speaker, the Baptist Orphanage at Thomasville was considered and a collection taken for the same. Rev. Mr. Summerell, pastor of the Presbyterian church and Rev. Mr. Massey, pastor of the Methodist ch urch, participated in the dedicatory exercises. On the rostrum were the pastor Rev. J. D. Hufham Rev. Mr. SummereM, Rev. Mr. Massey, Rev. Dr. J. A. Min- j dv, Rev. R. T. Vann, and Rev. J. W. i Powell. Rev. Mr. Massey, of the Methodist church, read the Seripiuu .-, Rev. Mr. Summerell, of the Presby-c-riau church, led the congregation in prayer. Rev. Dr. J. A. Mundy, pastor of ihe Wilson Baptist church, preached the dedica tory sermon from Acts 20:1:5: "ft is more blessed to give than to receive." The sermon was able and powerful and characteristic of the great preacher, but we will not attempt any analysis of it. At the conclusion of the sermon. Rev. li. T. Vann. in a few brief but well chosen remarks, formally dedicated the church building and all its appurte nances to the service of Almighty God and declared it henceforth the "House of the Lord." Benediction by Rev. Mr. Massey. notes. The visitors to the meeting were lav ish in their praise of the people of Tar boro for their hospitality, regardless" of the denomination of either hosts or guests. Dr. Hufham said publicly and pri vately that the people of Tarboro have done nobly in helping him raise the money with which to pay oil the debt on his church. And he also said they were kind and obliging in every possi ble way in w hich they could assist him in entertaining visitors to his church.
