BOOK OF -REVELATIONS. NOETH CAROLINA AT LAST GETS DUE RECOGNITION FOR HEROISM IN "WAR. Officially Proclaimed First. Neu t Observer. Wasiii.vton, I). C, May A quarter of a century passed before the people of North Carolina, modest and shrinking in their matchless heroism, knew how much her sons contributed to the glory of the Southern cau.e. Most of the great officer came from other States, but it was .North Caroli na bravery that etood the shot and shell of the enemy, and yet, until the past few years, the Tar I leek them- Fclves did not know how lar they sur passed all their sister Southern States I have been intending to examine the official records in the War Record office here to furnish your readers nith ... - 1 1 the facts. But while delaying 101 a more convenient season" to secure the date, the New York Tint', always ac curate ana fair (and I may add, of late, always enterprising) has given its read ers the facts in much better shape than I could have hoied to do. The follow ing article, in a recent issue of the Times will be read wherever the En glish language is spoken, and it will tell a story that will give to North Car olina the first place in American histo ry : XOUTII TAKOUN'A AND TIFF. CIVIL WAK. 'Though but little has been printed concerning the work of the War De partment, yet this has bten a trrrncn- dous task. Forty-nine volumes of near ly a thousand pages each, are complet ed, and furnish the most accurate his tory ever published of a nation's inter necine war. The work has been im partially done. Besides the live Union officers employed, two Coniederat Gen. officers have always l?en engaged in editing the war archives of the dead Confederacy. "The most interesting feature of the work is an exhaustive compilation from official records of the casualties on both sides in the war. Here are facts, not opinions. It will bo made plain, be yond all room for con trovers', in this volume, that much of the hardest fight ing of the war was between the army of the Potomac and the Army of North ern Virginia, and the figures in this volume will show that tiie infantry reg iments from the eastern States did the hardest fighting in the Union Army. Thej" abo prove that the Confederacy succumbed by the. exhaustion of Lee's army. "The table of dentil and wounds that are given measure the actual fighting as nothing else can. Or.c thing clearly shown is the overshadowing importance of the battles of Gettysburg and Chick amauga, the greatest battles the Con federate ant Union armies ever fought. The lo?scs in these engagements prove how much fiercer was the fighting in these battles than U was before or ever was again between the two armies en gaged during the war. "The heroic valor oi the North Caro lina troops excites the highest admira tion, and Pennsylvania, which lost more in killed and wounded, in propor tion to the number of its troops, can well send greeting to North Carolina, whose soldiers at Gettysburg did the hardest fighting on the other side, over the happy reunion of the present year. "This is the book of revelations as to both sides of the ciyil war. On the Confederate side North Carolina lost more soldiers killed than any other Southern State. The following was the total loss in killed and mortally wounded of several of the Southern States : North Carolina, -1514,52 ; Vir ginia 5,328; South Carolina, !),1S7; Georgia, 5,553; Mississippi, 5,807; Louisiana, 9,714. North Carolina heads the list in the number that died of wounds and 20,002 oi her sons died oi disease. North Carolina's mili tiry population in 1861 was 115.69, b it she furnished 125,000 to the Con federate cause. The percentage of lost, killed and wounded was greater in the Confederate armies than in the Union armies. At Gettysburg the 26th North Carolina, of Tettigrew's brigade, went into action with over 800 men and lost 558 in killed and wounded. The 20th North Carolina had only 516 men left for duty when it went into Longstreet's assault on the third day, and on the following day but eighty were left. On the first day Capt. Tuttle's company went into action with three officers and eighty-four men. All of the officers and 83 of the men were killed or wound ed. Oa the same day Company C, of the 1 1 1 Ii North Carolina. Do Yon Know that in most countries druggists are not permitted to sell narcotics without labeling them poisons ? Do Yon Know that yoa should not permit any medicine to be given your child unless you or your physician know of what it is composed ? Do Yon Know that Castoria is a purely vegetable preparation, and that a list of its ingredients is published with every bottle ? Do Yon Know that Cactoria is the prescription of the famous Dr. Samuel Pitcher. That it has been in use for nearly thirty years, and that more Castoria is now sold than of all other remedies for children combined ? Do Yon Know that the Patent Office Department of the United States, and of other countries, have issued exclusive right to Dr. Titcher and his assigns to use the word Castoria" and its formula, and that to imitate them is a state prison offense J Do Yon Know that one of the reasons for granting this government protection was because Castoria had been proven to be absolutely harmless?
