THE HELP OE GOD'S WORD.
There is a lamp whoso stead7 light
Guides the poor traveler in the night ;
lis Gods own word! Its beaming
ray
Can turn a midnight into day.
There is a storehouse of rich fare,
Supplied with plent', and to spare :
'Tis God's own word ! It spreads a feast
l or every hungering, thirsty guest.
There is a Chart whose tracings show
The onward course when tempests blow ;
lis God s own word ! There, there i
found
Direction for the homeward bound.
There is a tree whose leaves impart
Health to the burdened, contrite
heart :
Tis God's own word ! It cures of sin,
And makes the guiltv conscience clean.
Give me this lamp to light my road ;
This storehouse for my dally food ;
Give me this chart for life's rough sea ;
These healing leayes, this heavenly tree.
Help Yourself.
Henderson Hustler.
Fight your own battles. Hoe your
own row. Ask no favors ol any one.
and you will succeed a thousand times
better than one who is always beseech
ing some one's inllnence and patronage.
No one will help you as you help your
self, because no one is so heartily inter
ested in your affairs. The hrst step
will be such a long one, perhaps ; but,
carving your way up the mountain,
you make each one lead to another,
and stand firm while you chop still an
other out. Men who have made for
tunes are not those who . have had five
or six thousand dollars given them to
start with, but boys avIio have started
fair with a well earned dollar or two.
Men who acquire fame have never
been thrust into popularity by puffs
begged or paid for, or given in public
spirit. They have outstretched their
own hands and touched the public
heart. Men who win love do their
own wooing ; and I never knew a man
to fail so signally as one who induced
his affectionate grandmother to speak
a good word for him. Whether you
work for fame, for love, for money, or
for anything else, work' with your hands
and heart, and brain. Say, "I will,"
and some day you will conquer. Nev
er let any man have to say, "I have
dragged you up." Too many friends
sometimes hurt a man more than none.

About Electricity.
Norfolk Landmark.
Considering the fact that some phi
losophers have contended with great
plausibility that electricity is the mo
tive power of the universe, it is remark
able that men have not made more use
of it than they have, or that is has not
been substituted for steam and gas long
ago. It is, however, now rapidly as
suming proportions which promise to
make it supplant all of the older meth
ods of motive power. The Pennsylva
nia Railroad Company will, it is said,
shortly operate its line between Wash
ington and Alexandria by an electric
trolley. The New York Central rail
road has under consideration a propo
sition for electricity instead of steam
on the New York and Putnam railroad,
a fifty-mile branch that runs through
the Harlem Valley. It is not unlikely
that the Baltimore and Ohio will in a
short time adopt the same power. The
only thing which has retarded the
introduction of eleotrlcty in these lar
ger affairs of moving railroad trains, a
well as in general lighting and heating,
is the expensiveness, but that obstacle
is gradually passing away as the means
of producing electricit lecomes cheap
er. There is nothing more certain to
the scientific vision than that electrici
ty will supplant steam and gas and
heat in their various relations to hu
man enterprise and comfort, and the
world is moving m that direction with
accelerated motion.
