So many things have transpired for the two weeks past to till our columns with news we have only space 'ere to wish all our readers a happy new" year. We propose to keep up our weekly visits to as many as will pay us to do so ; and we hope our interests may still remain mutual. POLITIC A L CIIAXGES. Since The Democrat last greeted its readers Dec. I Ot h , there have been some changes in the political situation of the country. One of the most stir ring events was President Cleveland's special message to Congress concerning the disputed boundary line between British Guiana and Venezuela. The 1 'resident declared that Great Britain had refused to arbitrate, and applied the "Monroe doctrine" in his recom mendations to Congress. He recommended the appropriation of $100,000 by Congress to defray the expense of a commission to be appoint ed ly him to ascertain the line in dis pute. Doth houses of Congress con curred in passing a hill for the appro priation. It lias been given out that the President has appointed Edward J. Phelps of Vermont, and Robert T. Lin coln, of Illinois, both ex-ministers to England. He will appoint another on the commission. There was a little breeze that smacked of war a few days hut that has all passed away. There will be no war. The fund raised by the South port Lcatler to purchase a memorial for the United States cruiser liah-iyh, now amounts to $o00. The Republicans have secured the control of the commutes of the Senate by tfie Populists not voting. The Re publicans say they have made a trade with the Populists, although Cutler de nies it. Tdr. K. C. Murray. 'editor of the Nor folk La.n'i.iark, died Monday Iroia a second stroke of paralysis. He was a good journalist, a man of considerable popularity, and all Virginia mourns with Norfolk for his death. Mr. II. C. Olive, of Apex, said re cently that the agricultural interests of that community have been as well kept up for the past ten years and have paid as well as m any part of the coun try. All the farmers there have money, many new homes have been built and many of the young men. can not be hired to leave the farm. There are good school-bouses and churches and everything is in a prosperous condi tion. Tobacco crops have been good and that has had much to do thrift of the community. ith the A gentleman ol mucn observation remarked to us recently that North Carolina needs to wake up to three things: Dad literature ought to bo kept out ot the hands of the young, boys ought to be stopped from smok ing cigarettes, and a reformatory ought to be established for young criminals. Said he, '-'The boys of the State Avill soon have to take charge, and their moral and physical powers ought to be preserved by abolishing bad liter ature and cigarettes." There is more Catarrh m this section of the country than all other diseases put together, and until the last few years was supposed to be incurable. For a great many years doctors pronounced it a lacal disease, and prescribed local remedies, and by constantly failing to cure with local treatment, pronounced it incurable. Science has proven catarrh to be a constitutional disease, and therefore, requires constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cine, manu factured by F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo,. Ohio, is the only constitutional cure on the market. It is taken mternahy in doses from 10 drops to a teaspoon ful. It acts directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system. They offer one hundred dollars for an- case it fails to cure. Send for circulars and testimonials. Ad.re?s, F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo, O. Sold by druggist, 7"c. WANTED : Several trustworthy gen tlemen or ladies to travel in North Carolina, lor established, reliable house. Salary 780 and expenses. Steady po U ion. Enclose reference and self ad dressed stamped envelope. The Do minion Company. Third Floor, Omaha Bldj., Chicago, ill. H l tf OLD -XKUSEArERS FOR SALE, 10 cts. per hundi 2!, gave the following pen photograph of North Carolina Congressmen now at Washington : To take a running glance at the North Carolina delegation, it seems to be the prevailing opinion, all politic? aside, that Linney, Republican, from the Eighth District, has attracted thus far the greatest amount of attention of the nine from the Tarheel State. He drew sharp notice to himself, when, on Thursday, lie asKed a question by way of protest against the rule shutting off the debate on the tariff bill at 5 o'clock. Thus it may have happened that he alone was cent out by the press dis patches as having voted against the gag. Put Skinner, from the First, and Stroud, from the Fourth, both Populists, yoted also with the Demo crats again-t the rule. Linney is undoubtedly beginning to develop symptoms of thinking for him self that are causing the Speaker some uneasiness, and should he persist in his independent course it is quite likely that he will be returned to his scat by an incre.-ed majority. I'EAUSOX. Mr. Pearson (Republicau) comes from the Ninth District, and readers of the Dispatch during the hot political light in North Caiolina last winter will doubtle.-s recall the persistent and suc cessful attempt of Mr. Pearson to have Mitchell county taken out of Linney's district and put into his. Pearson was elected by only 135 majority, and as main- think, he is a congressman more lor the social fun and distinction ol the thing than for any great mark he can make, it was quite natural for him not to get himself into fashionable Wash ington harness until he had by tho ad dition of more votes, added thus to the probability of his return. Dut it seems quite likely in the minds of some in telligent Democrats that his next re turn will be a return home. For the majority in his district was reduced to 135 from that of several thousand to the Republican who preceded him, whereas Linney had converted a 1,000 Democratic into a 3,000 Republican majority. CKIXXEK. Harry Skinner, elected as a Populist from the First District, has thus far distinguished himself mainly by voting for the tariff bill, thus putting an addi tional burden on cotton-ties and ' ag ging, for which, no doubt, he will find it hard to make answer to his constit uents. Stroud, (Populist), from the Fourth District, has voted consistently with his party, and seems to be doine: the best he can, which, however, in a body of congressmen, can hardly be said to be very luminous with promise. But he is a good kind of an old man. SETTLE A WIZARD. Settle (Republican), from the Fifth, is the wizard of the lot, and keeps ac tive in behalf of the Speaker's meas ures, seemingly for fear his colleagues may suspect that he does not "stand in" as solidly with the Czar as he seems to think he does. But he is shrewd, and has made a number of friends on both sides, and is undoubtedly some what of a favorite with Mr. Reed. Shu ford, from the Seventh, was elected as a Populist, in spite oi which, however, he yoted for the tariff bill. Of course, he must appear at great dis advantage, followirg, as ho does, John S. Henderson, who, as chairman cf Post-Offices and Post-Roads, was, per haps, the most conspicuous of the last North Carolina delegation. SHAW. Shaw (Democrat), from the Third District, fought a three-cornered battle with Spears (Republican), and Thorrp son, a Populist, and now president of the State Farmers' Alliance. There are some Republicans, even, who think in fluences have been brought to bear which will cause him to keep his seat His counsel is his Republican opponent, Spears, who was a Republican national delegate in the famous third-term Grant convention, and who is a man of force and influence with his party. But Shaw claims, besides, a right to his seat, which is undoubted. Shaw is a young man, self-made, and a clever, all-'round fellow. It is hardly fair for people to judge at this stage of the game ; it is impossi ble fairly to judge, and yet Lockhart seems to be regarded as of greatest promise among the Democrats. He is a man ot strong sense, and cordial", winning personality and presence. He is at present detained at home by the sickness of his child, who is quite ill with typhoid-fever. W'OODARD. Tho seat of Mr. Woodard, also Demo crat, from the Second District, is con tested by a negro, Cheatham, but Woodard's claim seems clear beyond all doubt, but he may be said to lack that magnetism which might aid him before a committee ; and, if he Avins, it will be on the merits of his case alone, and they seem almost undoubted from a reading of his case, an outline of which was recently published in the Raleigh News and Observer Settle says the whole delegation is VOMlig II. tm:ci: tic, LAND SALE- In pursuance of a deed ol trut execut ed to me ms trustee by Geo.
