"Hill Xye'd" will was admitted to
proWate a few days ago. His wife is
the sole eiceutnx, and the benelici.uy

property 'h;3 not been given out. The
syndicate articles of the humorist, to
gether with his lectures, brought him
an income of some twenty or thirty
thousand dollars a year.
The implement of public roads is
a question now before most of the
State's of tho Union, in some form or
other. It is, indeed, a very important
one. Xothing would inure to quick
ening the interest of agriculture more
than a general good condition of coun
try roads. The total length of com
mon roads in the country is aid to be
1.300,000 miles ; and some one observes
that they are mostly bad.
We heard a gentleman of much ob
servation in many parts of the country
say recently that if the cigarette- habit
continues to grow on the boys lor
the next generation as it has for the
past few years, there will not be brains
enough left to run the Government.
Ha said that nothing is so sapping to
the very vitals of the youth of the land
as cigarettes, and that cigarettes and
whi.-key may well be classed as co-evils.
It is frequently remarked that hh
and oysters are fine brain food. Indeed
there is a prevailing opinion that cer
tain properties in them are conducive
to the health and activity of the brain.
The observation one makes of fisher
men and oystermen who are supposed
to eat more of them than others, hard
ly bears out the idea that any special
brain food i derived from these prod
ucts of the deep.
A wr'.ter to a Xew York paper asks
the editor what he thinks of the where
abouts of Satan along now. The writer
wants to Know it tha devil is not loose.
Well, we do not know just how it is up
in Xew York we can make some guess
from published accounts but if the
questioner will drop down into North
Carolina and peep into the jaih, he
will find a good many of Satan's coad
jutors behind the bars, but the old fel

Well, we have often said that the

about as good as the best.
In view of the frequent forest fires
caused by the sparks from railroad
trains, a gentleman of close observation
and withal a wise and intelligent man,
remarked a few days ago that it is a
question with him as to whether or not
the railroads should be held responsi
ble for these damages. In this season
of the vear when high winds pre
vail, the fires are often the source of
destruction to much valuable property
An individual would be held responsi
ble and we do do not see why railroad
companies should not be. They are at
work for what business there is in it
and not for the special accommodation
of the public.

A Citizen
Ali7e-C:nclTisiT2 Eviiense.
Mr. II. L. Wooten, of Xewlern, in-
forms the Journal of distres.-ing revela-1
t'.on which came about through the!
removal of the body of his uncle, the late
Mr. Charles Wooten, of Centreville.
I'itt county. Mr. Wooten died about
live years ago, and the other day his
brother-in-law, Mr. Jos. May, disinterr
ed the remains to place them else
where. Both the box and colhn were found
in a good state of preservation but one
side of the coffin was found to have
been forced off to have been forced
with such violence as to break the
screws, and Mr. Wooten 'd body instead
of being on its back in which position
it is absolutely known to have been
buried, was on the side with the face
toward the part of the coffin which
had been burst open.
There seeans to be but one solution
of this condition of affairs and that is
that life was not extinct when Air.
Wooten was interred, and that he re
vived before death came and strug
gled sufficiently to send the coffin in
the manner described.
We believe such a case as this is of
extremely rare occurrence, but as such
do happen, even if these cases are
widely seperated, we blame no one ior
exercising every precaution possible
to insure against the premature burial
of their loved ones.

Incomprehensible Ingratitude cf
Children.
X. Y. Correspondent to Charlotte Ob
server. There was a man named Harnes and
he had three children, Herbert, Harry
and Lucretia. And the man worked
hard all the days of his life and kept
his children in luxury and died and
left a will. And in the will he gave to
his wife if" 150.000. and to each ot his
children 52.000, and to each of his
two sisters 1,500 each. And that was
all his fortune save 2,000. This sum
he desired to be expended in the erec
tion of a monument over his dead
body. And the widow was content ;
but the children said, "How large a
sum to expend for a block of stone !
Why should our father have so costly
a monument? Surely 500 is enough.
Let us t-pend that sum for the monu
ment and divide the remaining 1,500
of the 2,000 equally among us three
and so increase our portion to 52,500."
So Herbert and Harry and Lucretia
brought suit in the courts and it is
there now ; and the widow's lawyer
says the children are as ungrateful as
the children of Lear, and the children's
lawyer says, "Look at the monument
over Washington Irving, m the ceme
tery at Sleepy Hollow; that did not
cost 500 ; w hy should Barnes have
costlier one?" But Barnes was a suc
cessful business man and a prominent
citizen of Xew York. But his chil
dren loved him not, tor he was as a
stranger unto them. For the poor
man has a home, but the rich man has
only a club ; and the children of the
poor have fathers and mothers, but the
children of the rich have only govern
esse s and tutors.

Talking ot phonographs.
An old farmer the other day had
just driven into town with his mules to
sell a load of pumpkins, and stopped in
front oi the phonograph store.
"What air them follows rtoin' m
there with spouts in their ears?" he
asked.
"Those are talking machines," an
swered a man in the doonvav.
The farmer was a little incredulous,
but he finally left his mules and went
into the store. The tubes were placed
in his ears, he dropped the nickel in
rhe slot and a brass band begun to
play.
Whoa, there!" shouted the rustic,
darting out of the store, "them mules
o' mine won't stand no brass band."
Did you ever stop to think what in
digestion really means9 It means sim
plv that your stomach is tired. If out
legs are tired, we ride. The horse and
the steam engine do the work. Why
not give your stomach a ride ; that is,
let something else do its work. Food
can be digested outside of the body.
All plan's contain digestive principles
which will do this. The Shaker Di
gestive Cordial contains digestive prin
ciples and is a preparation designed to
rest the stomach. The Shakers them
selves have suc h unbounded confidence
in it that they have placed 10 cent
sample bottles on the market, and it is
said that even so small a quantity
proves beneficir.l m a vast maionts of
cases. All druggists keep it.

A citizen with a swollen jaw was has

of the city, when a sitrn in front of the
building caught his attention. It was
as follows :
'i'ainle.-s Extraction ol Teeth Free."
He slopped long enough to note the
number of the lioor on which the bus
iness indicated by the sign was carried
on and then hurried inside and made
his way to the dental parlors.
'Is this the place where you pull
teeth free?" he inquired. "Yes, sir,"
said one of the painless extractors on
duty.
"Well, I've got a grinder that's b?en
giving me a good deal of trouble. I
wish you would yank it out."
Tho sufferer took his place in the
chair and opened his mouth. The
operator, after apying to the swollen
gum a pungent lotion of some sort,
speedily relieved him of the offending
molar.
'Thanks," said the caller, climbing
down and picking np his hat.
"That will he fifty cents,'' remarked
the dentist.
"Fifty cents?" echoed the other. "1
thought it was free. That's what, you
told me a minute ago, and it's what
you said on your sign."
"Just so. Did it hurt you any?"
"Yes. it hurt a little."
"That's right. We do our painless
extracting free, exactly as we claim.
When it hurts we charge for it. Fifty
cents, please."
To Haye a Sweet Breath.
Srh'ct'-d.
Don't expect to have clean teeth or
a sweet breath while there is a tinge of
white on the tongue. It is an unmis
takable evidence of indigestion. Drink
sour lemonade, eat ripe fruit and green
vegetables for purgatives; exercise
freely ; use plenty of water internally
and externally, and keep up the treat
ment until the mouth is clean, healthy
and red. Yarious things are suggested
to counteract an unpleasant breath,
resulting from a bad tooth or garlic
scented dishes. Cinnamon, mint,
creams, orris root, cloves, mastic-resin
and spruce gum will disguise some
oJors. Ten drops of tincture of myrrh
in a :lnss of water will sweeten and
refresh the mouth ; a teaspoon'til of
spirits ot camphor or peppermint in
the same gargle is among the hest an
tiseptics, and a lew drops of mvrrh and
ctmplior in tne water are recommedtd
in case of cold, throat trouble or any
slight indisposition which may affect
the breathe.
