Already having --ome trade in Scotland Xeek thev come be fore our readers in a nice advertisement and solicit a continuation ot business and desire to enlarge their trade. Thoy are very clever and upright business men and Tin: Democrat commends them to Its- readers. They nhow aj.j.ie ciation of Scotland Xeek patronage by 1-Iarmg an ad. in this paper, and we hope Scotland Xeek people will diow appreciation of their ad. by giving them orders for their goods. T. E. Havman A- Co. Xorfolk men have lor a long time realized that Scot land Xer-k is a good business point for them to reach. Many of them think they can reach business hero better through the columns of Tin: Democrat than any other way. So think Mess. Havman A Co., and they accordingly place their ad. in this paper and solicit business from our readers. We com mend them to our readers and hope that they may do good business, in this section. Mr. W. W. Kitchin the Speaker. Mes-rs. I'rince and AVilson, princi pals of the male academy, have de cided to call the school no longer "Scotland Xeek Male School," but "Vine Hill Male Academy," which Mas the name the old male school bore be fore the new school was built in anoth er part of town. They have secured to deliver their annual address at the approaching com mencement Mr. W. W. Kitchin of Rox boro. Mr Kitchin is one of the bright est, most successful and popular youn.tr lawyers oT the State, and Scotland Neck being hi old home the people of the entire community will be delighted to learn that he is coming. Mess. I'rince and W ilson have du ring the year purchased something over f 100 woith of hooks for the school li brary. The literary societies have re cently received a set of the latest edi tion of Encyclop.-cdia l?ritannica. The books are bound in tho best of sheep and the students paid more than half the price without any extra assessment of members of the societies. The people oi Scotland Xeek ana community greatly appreciate the work of these young men to build up our ed ucational interests of the community, and many will be glad to learn that the school is to assume its former name -Vine Hill Male Academy." Road Machine on the Streets. Mr. Edward Watson recently bought a roa I machine with which to put his track at the training stables in good condition. He has secured a contract with the town to work the streets by the mile. The machine was put on the streets Tuesday and the work is very satisfac tory. With the streets put in first class condition with Mr. Watson's ex cellent road machine, and the arching shade trees that overhang them, Scot land Xeek will, without question, l2 the prettiest town in the State. Tun Democrat hopes to see the ma chine put on the roads leading to town ; and with this improvement the town anc" community will be under obliga tions to Mr. Watson for introducing the machine. Why Not Scotland Neck? The town of Rock Hill, S. C, in 1 S had SCO inhabitants. Xotv it has 5.-.00. In 1SS0 the assessed value of the taxable property was only 1"0.000. It has invested in cotton mills since that time .fSOO ,000 and mostly local monev. The payroll of its factories is (5,000 a week and the annual aggre gate of its business is ,f 4 ,',00,000. All this has come from the energy and push of its people. Whv cannot Scotland Xeek move up a little? The fourth of May the annual meet ing of the stockholders in the knitting mills of this place will be held ; and in view of tins The Demockat calls at tention to the prosperity of Rock Hill. A gentlemen said a few days ago that if the knitting mills here should shut down two weeks the whole com inunitv would feel it sen.ibly. This is true "And now while these facts are in our faces can't we make some move for a greater development? bat can we do'.' What will we do? You fro- quentiy nave a u. v.. m. irom King wood in your columns and quite likely so good a thing as a S. S. Convention will the next time appear with it ; but I wish to speak, too, on this subject : Piinkleyville township's semi-annual Sundav-school convention held its 8tring session in Ringwood. Airil 2!rd , a beautiful day. The attendance was very good lor a work day Thuisday. It is comforting and encouraging to the Lord's people clinging to him, do ing their best at all times to glorify him. Warren and .Nash counties were rep resented. Numbers of the medical pro fession were there, and of the law. mer chants, farmers, preachers and Sunday school superintendent, teachers and scholars, men women and children. Seyen of the eight church Sunday schools in the township were represent ed, all sending contributions. Four preachers of different denominations were present and gave help and en couragement ; four township presidents and the county president were there and all had a say. Dinner in abund ance was served in a large and beauti ful oak groye. The next convention goes to Central Cross M. E. church. This was held in the M. P. church, and the one preced ing this in the Baptist church. This was the 9th co-operative convention held in this township and good is com ing of it. Enfield township the largest in the county is to hold its convention at Dawson'; X Roads Baptist church on the fourth Sunday in June. Littleton township is getting ready for its convention at Littleton, and I do sincerely wish that every township president in Halifax county will hold a convention in his township for the good ot the cause before the middle of Julv. because the county convention comes off at Halifax a little later than that and we wish a representative from each. I give herewith a list o! the town ship presidents. I hope every one oi them take your clean sheet" so that it may be a medium for this work as well as for secular things : Brinkleyviile, L.
