Points and Paragraphs of Things Present, Past and Future. Ihe editor of the Arena has been giving some very interesting articles on WThittier. One in the June num ber on "Whittier, the Prophet of Free dom," was especially interesting, and the article in the July number on miner, tne Man, was also quite interesting. It has been expressed by some news papers in the State that the nomina tion of Tom Watson for Vice-President by the Populists at St. Louis was not intended to be permanent, but was only done for trading purposes. It is get ting time that politicians would stop trading and trafficking in the people's confidence. Let us hare some straight out business in our political conven tions. There has been a lively rate war re cently between the Seaboard Air Line and the Southern Railway companies, and it promised to become still more lively when the Southern made a cut of 80 per cent, on certain freight rates. But Judge Simonton put a quietus on the whole matter temporarily by granting an injunction against the rate war. The case will be argued be fore Judge Simonton in Greenville, S. C, August 15th. The following from the Greenville Reflector shows how whiskey makes people act in Pitt county, and the world's map is dotted all over with places where whiskey makes men do the same thing. The Reflector says : "Last Saturday afternoon L. F. An derson, who lives about three miles in the country, was in town. Among the purchases he made was some whiskey and a pistol. He put the liquor under his shirt and the pistol in his pocket and went home. After supper while his wife was sitting near him, he began ooling with the pistol and snapping it. His wife had just remonstrated with him for handling the weapon so care- essly, when the usual report occurring under such circumstances was heard and a ball passed clear through Mrs. Anderson's neck right near the jugular vein. "Dr. F. W. Brown was sent tor and went out to dress the wound. He says that it is almost miraculous that Mrs Anderson was not killed instantly However she is getting along as well as could be expected and was able to ride to town to-day to see the doctor." There has been a striking similarity between the proceedings ot the various national conventions that have been held this year. They have all had serious dissensions. The Prohibition convention was the first to disagree. It split on the money question. The Republican convention did the same and a formidable bolt was the result, the silver men leaving thft convention in the hands of the gold men. Then the Democratic con vention experienced almost the same thing. There was a sharp fight be tween the gold and silver forces, but the silver strength easily held the con vention, notwithstanding the strong protests of the gold men. So nearly was there a bolt that the gold men have been threatening ever since to put out another national tick et. The Poptdists rounded up the bus iness by holding the last national con vention, and they had as hard fight ing and aid as strange things to keep together as any of the others. With so much dissension and bitterness amongst those of the same party house hold it will be something strange some one is noi greawj ou.. u fiai TEiiit. is reached. For a long time there was a prevail ing opinion that the lands ot Eastern Carolina were not suited to the grow ing of fine tobacco. Some years ago occasionally a farmer here and there would toy a tobacco crop, but not knowing exactly how to manage it, the crop was a failure oftener than otherwise. This served to add strength to the prevailing opinion that the lands here would not produce a quality ot the weed which would sell for enough to justify its cultivation. Some such circumstance as this occurred near Scotland Neck a few years ago. Gradually, however, the farmers in various parts of Eastern Carolina kepti experimenting until they began to learn something about the crop and also to cure it properly. Pitt county farmers, we believe, were the most suc cessful for several years, and they have persevered in their work until now It is about the best money crop they pro duce. IN HALIFAX COUNTY. About four years ago a few farmers of this community began raising tobac co, among whom were the late Wil- iam Hodges, who was quite success- ul with his crops, Mr. W. T. White head and others. For a number of years farmers in the western part of Halifax county, where the lands are stiff and somewhat rocky, have been successful with the crop ; but the opin ion still prevailed that the lands around Scotland Neck were not suited to it. But when a crop or two had been grown here and it was found that the tobacco produced in this community was as good as that from other sections, tobacco farmers in the upper counties began to come in and soon larger crops were planted, fine cures were made and those who had said fine tobacco could not be raised here began to con- clude they were mistaken. ABOUT SCOTLAND NECK. Two years aco many farmers near Scotland Neck planted small crops as experiments, and were successful far beyond their expectation. Last year their crops were enlarged and many others planted also. This year the crop Is 100 per cent, larger tftan it has been belore. This is true not only as to the farms near Scotland Neck, but in al most every part of Halifax as well as adjoining counties. Not only haye the crops been grown successfully but the prices paid for the tobacco from this immediate sec tion have been almost uniformly satis factory, and in some instances better than for tobacco grown in other parts of Eastern Carolina. Most of the to bacco raised here has been shipped to Rocky Mount, and the warehouse man agers always make a good place for shipments from about Scotland Neck. One farmer carried such fine tobacco from this community that it was ship ped separately to a market in Virginia and it took considerable emphasis to make the man who handled it in Vir ginia believe that it was raised in Eas tern Carolina. DR. WOOD'S CROP. Among the land owners in and around Scotland Neck who have in vested in tobacco culture this year is Dr. William E. Wood. He has a beau R. WOOD'S TOBACCO FARM NEAR SCOTLAND tiful farm just on the outskirts of the town and he has a portion of it in to bacco this year. The crop has been cultivated by Mr. G. M. Flemming, an experienced tobacco farmer from Granville countj The above cut shows a portion of Dr. Wood's farm just as the tobacco crop was beginning to ripen. It is a magnificent growth and shows the best of cultivation. A part of the crop is grown on the very lands which were cultivated in tobacco about twelve years ago by Capt W. R. Bond as an experiment. The crop produced then was fine, and it was finely cured ; but there was some delay by the railroads in spipping it, and when it reached its destination it was so damaged that it brought a very poor price. This mis hap with the first crop raised in the community greatTvdiscouraged those who were interested aud there was no further attempt made. The buildings shown in the cut are tall barns in which the tobacco is cur ed. They are built of logs, closely notched down and the cracks between tightly daubed with clay and lime. The curing of the crop is one of the most important features connected with tobacco farming ; and it requires skill and most careful attention to do it well. From the time the tobacco is placed in the barn until it Is perfectly cured the fires must be Kept burning every minute, and such is the impor tance of keeping the temperature ex actly right that it requires constant watching day and night. It generally takes about three days to cure a barn. On Dr. Wood's farm, a part of which is shown in the cut, is a large grove ' in which is a good and -substantial ; dwelling, with outhouses and every ! convenience to make a model tobacco j farm, and he proposes to add improve- ments from time to time until he will have one of the most desirable and prof itable tobacco farms in this entire sec tion. Dr. Wood, like many others in this community, has ventured for his first timfl tvn tnhartM culture tDts YCtu , nnd his success.thus far and the flatterine: prospects of good profit from his in vestment are quite encouraging indeed. OTHER TOBACCO LANDS. There are still large bodies ol tobacco land around Scotland Neck that have not been touched and every condition nqw points to a great industry for this town and community in the cultiva ting and handling of tobacco. The thousands of acres hereabouts waiting for development will doubtless yield handsome little fortunes within a very few years. There is no market in Scotland Neck, but Tarboro and Rocky Mount markets have handled most of the crop from this section, and Enfield's new market will soon be opened which will afford a nearer convenience for selling than farmers have had before. And if the crop continues to increase here as it has tor the past two years, it will soon be almost a necessity for Scotland Neck to have a market of its own. With tobacco, as with cotton, the manufacture logically belongs to the i community in which it is grown, and - 1 wben a few years from now the tobacco i TOBACCO. NECK. crop here shall be one of the leading money crops, it may follow that tobac co factories will be erected in Scotland Neck and this may become one of the richest towns in the State. These are undoubtedly latent possibilities, and it is only a matter of choice with the peo ple of this section whether or not they will seize the opportunity themselves, or induce capitalists elsewhere to come and help develop the magnificent pos sibilities which lie' about us on every hand. COUNTY ACREAGE. The Commonwealth hopes to be able in a few weeks to give approxi mately the acreage ot tobacco in Hal ifax county. We have already quite a good list of the tobacco farmers in the various townships in the county, together with the number of acres they have in cultivation. We shall be glad to have the names of any who are raising tobacco in the county and to have also the number of acres each has in cultivation. All persons who furnish us with such information will be doing the industry in the coun ty a favor. Such facts in tabulated form in The Commonwealth office will be a means of easy information to persons outside of the county who may wish to learn something of the tobacco industry here, either for the purpose of handling tne crop or pur chasing land. the markets. The chief markets for the tobacco crop raised in this county are Hender son, Rocky Mount, Tarboro, Enfield, and Greenville. Henderson gets some of the crop raised in the western part of the county, and Rocky Mount has been getting a part of it also. Enfield will now doubtless handle most ot the r crop grown-fn that immediate section. Tarborcf has handled a good share of the crop produced in the southern por tion of. the county. Rocky Mount has handled more of the Halifax crop than any other single market. Greenville has also handled some from this immediate section. Them are now convenient markets in ail these towns and with the proper conditions a year or two hence, Scot land Neck will doubtless .have a market also. He Sat Sown. Leiviston Journal. He whs no orntor, lut he knew when he had said all that he could say. He was a Maine man, and attempted to speak in a town meeting on a subject that greatly interested him. "Fellow-citizens," he sang out lustily, as he arose "fellow-citizens !" D., of St Louis, says that the best food for those suffer ing from typhoid feyer is the banana. In this disease, he explains, the lining membrane of the small intestines be comes intensely inflamed and engorg ed. Eventually it begins sloughing away in spots, leaying well defined ul cers. At these places the intestinal walls become dangerously thin. A sol id food, if taken into the stomach, is likely to produce perforation of the in testines and dire results will follow. Therefore solid foods or foods contain ing a large amount of innutritious sub stances, as compared with nutritious substances, are dangerous and are to be avoided. The banana although it may be classed as a solid food, containing as it does 95 per cent, nutrition, does not possess sufficient waste to irritate these sore spots. Nearly the whole amount taken into the stomach is absorbed and gives the patient more strength than enn be obtained from other food. The Ideal Panacea James L.
