Jiut beware, you omnivo rous learners, of acquiring ideas and then having them remain unassimilat- ed, like the food on an overloaded stomach. As to learning, I would say, he in a skeptical frame of mind ; reject he things that you prove to be untrue ; read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest ill the truths that you prove and ap prove, or that reach you from reliable sources, and let them become part of you ; just as the steak you eat and as similate is no longer steak, but has be- flower. But we are all called to a he-1 roism far transcending that, a heroism that keeps us quietly and unobstrusive- y working for national and personal betterment in our little sphere unknown to the rest of the world, cheered by the applause of men, unaided by the hoarse- throated cannon. Let me give public ity to one such brave deed, at least. The newspapers from east to west have contained casual references to the recent burning of toll-gates by mobs in Kentucky. Eight in the aisaffected region lives the editor of the Vance- burg Sun, terribly dependent upon his local patrons as all country editors are. Yet on on his first page he places a no tice two columns wide and surrounded bv a border. Her house was burned, the plantation in ruins, trampled down by the army. One day she carried him some beef tea. Every drop was pre cious ; for it was with difficulty that hA had obtained the beet irom which it was made. As she sat watching her boy sip the steaming, savory broth, her eye caught the eager, hungry look of a man on the next cot. He was a Yankee, perhaps one ot the very band who had burned her home. Then she brought fresh water, and bathed the soldier's face and hands as gently as if be, too, had been her son. The next day when she re turned, he was'gone, having oeen ex changed to the North. Last winter the son of a Senator from a Northern State brought home with him during the Christmas vacation, a young engineer from Virginia. He was the only liv ing son of Mrs. B , the boy whom she had nursed having been killed du ring the later years of the war. She had struggled for years to educate this boy as a civil engineer, and had done But without influence he couia not obtain position, and was supporting mmselt by copying. We have seen skilled athletes, some climbing upouthe strung shoulders of others, tin til they reach three, four, perhaps five rows up in the air. So with men to-day. We have climbed upon the shoulders of the generations of the past until we have reached a point of eminent progress To .what greater heights the coming generations may climb upon our dead selves, eye hath not seen nor ear heard ; neith er hath it entered into the heart of man to conceive. But men will con tinue to reach out and up, to progress, to attain, until the ideal of the millen nium is come. Is the world any the better?
