ABOUT FR FIGHT BATES.
The Charlotte papers haye been say
ing recently that Charlotte is as badiy
discriminated against in matters of
freight rate?, perhaps, as any othei
town in the State.
This, together with personal observa
tion and wDat others have told us.
leads us to think of the high freight
rates which the people of Scotland
Neck have to pay. Time and again
have we heard it said that the high
freight rates niuet neeesanly be the
rippling of industries nerelmtii there
ball be some reduction.
Of course everybody knows that rail
road corporations are in business foi
the money they get out of it ; but the
are not always unreasonable. And ii
eems to us that the people of Scotland
Neck ought to be able to bring the
proper influence to bear on the railroac
companies whereby they would be in
duced to make their rates easier.
For instance, if by having rate,
easier capital should be induced tc
combine for operating a large cottot
mill here, it seems that the incieasec
business which would thus come to tht
railroads would more than compensate
tbem for the iosa in freight rates or
other things.
Cannot I he business men of Scotland
Neck put their intelligence togethe;
and bring such influence to bear on the
railroads as will bring about a change
in rates?
It seems worth, considering.

Whitakers, N. C, April 3rd '99
Easter was appropriately observed at
the Protestant church on Sunday
night. The exercises were pleasing
and attractive. The music, recitations,
tc. were very eood. There was a largo
crowd and a good collection.
Dr. W. S. Jones, oi Goldsboro, was
in town Thursday, looking around with
a view to locating here. We hope be
will come.
Mr. and Mrs. Joe Batts and baby, ot
Halifax, came Saturday to spend Sun
day with his parents.
- Mr. Alphonso Hatcher, of Richmond,
has been in town several days the guest
f Mrs. L. J. Dayis and daughter, Miss
Hattie. x
Miss Lillah Mann, who has been at
tending Littleton Female College, came
home Friday to spend Easter. She
was-accompanied by Miss Teasdale, her
music teacher.
Mr. E. P. Land has been appointed
Fertilizer Inspector for Edgecombe
county. He left last week to enter up
on his duties.
Mr. W. C. Taylor had the misfortune
to low a barn and twenty five or thirty
barrels, of corn and some farming im
plements by fire on Saturday night.
Origin ot the fire not known. Loss
between two and three hundred dollars
No insurance.
Mr. P. Y. Matthews after an absence
of several months has returned- to

HOMICIDE AT BETHEL.
Monday's Greenville Reflector gave
tho following account of a bar-room
brawl at Bethel :
"Mr. Robert Sfaton keeps a bar-room
at Bethel. Mr. W. C. Nelson was a
clerk in this bar-room, and he also own
ed a pool table which v.-as rurTin con
nection with the saloon. Mr. W. N.
M. Hammond wn3 one of the Saturday
night patrons of ihe establishment.
After being there sometime he and Nel
son got into a dispute about a small
amount that Hammond owed for the
use of the pool table. In the dispute
Hammond -struck at Nelson with a beer
buttie and Nelson shot at him with a
pistol. This was followed by a iusilade
A beer bottles from one side and ol
pistol shots from the other, ?nd when
the smoke cleared away Hammond lay
If ad upon the floor and Nelson's skull
was fractured.
'The Coroner, C. O'H. Laughing
house, went oyer Sunday to hold an
inquest," and the aboye is about the
sum of the eyidence brought out at the
investigated. :
"Here is another striking lesson from
the open bar-roonViind gambling den.
A tvrfpse, a widow and several orphans,
another home wrecked because the
father's hands are stained with blood,
relatives on both sides crushed witb
sorrow and filled with bitterness that s
iile time will not blot out. All this
to satisfy the greed for gold ol the men
whom the law gives a license to stand
b3hin:l the bar and carry on a business
that damns men's souls and fills the
land with widows and wretchedness.
And christian people stand aloof anc
iiliow such to continue instead of rising
in their might and drrving the evil
from the land."
I was reading an advertisement of
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diar
rhoea Remedy ia the Worcester Enter
prise recently, which lends me to write
this. I can truthfully sayI never
used any remedy equal to it for colic
ind diarrhoea. I have never had to
U3c more than one or two doses to cure
tbe worst case with myself or children.

ITEMS FROM EINGWOOD.
(CorrsLipondence to The Commonwealth.)
Rixgwood, N. C, April 3rd. '99.
After a winter of unprecedented
32verity we hail with gladness the signs-
ot spring, which is aclvajjcing slowly
but surely.
It is a source of regret that our be
loved- minister, Rev. G. W. Phelps,
lid not preach for us Easter Sabbath,
his regular appointment, though Fri
day before the third Sabbath we will
expect him.
Bishop Cheshire has an appointment
here for the third Sabbath ; also Presi
dent Kennet, of the M. P. Church the
fourth Sabbath.
Probably ere that time their church,
which is being erected here, will be
finished.
Mr. John Bishop has been somewhat
indisposed, but ia now well.
To-day Mr. "Lucius D. Johnson
and family have moved to Littleton
to live. Regretting their loss to our
community, we extend them our best
wishes for their futur3 prosperity and
happiness.
Misses Delia Weller and Mary Har
rison have gone to Chockayoite to
visit relatives there.
Misses Prince and Jarratt from Vir
ginia, are visiting Misss Janet Dugger,
Pattie and Marie Williams, of our town.
The public schools of this township
have recently closed. Teachers were
probably glad of two months' terms ;
and wiil be gladder if similar 'terms be
given them ere the close of the year.
DISCOVERED BY A WOMAN.
Another great discovery has been
made and that too, by a lady in this
country. "Disease fastened its clutches
upon her and for seven years she with
stood its severest test, - but her vital
organs were undermined and death
seemed imminent. For three months
she coughed incessantly and could not
sleep, She finally discovered a way to
recovery by purchasing of us a bottle
of Dr. King's New Discovery for Con
sumption, and was so much relieved on
taking first dose, that she slept all
night and with two bottles has been
absolutely cured. Her name is Mrs
Luther Lutz." Thus writes W. C
Hamnick & Co., of Shelby, N. C. Trial
bottles free at E. T. Whitehead & Co.'s
Drug Store.' Regular size 50c. and
$1.00 every bottle guaranteed. -

A Curative Medicinal Treatment Founded on Modern
Scientific Truths is More Potent
Than Air Alone.
FRBB TREATMENT FOR X,UNG WEAKNESS.
If those of our readers who reside in
the most highly favored sections of this
country, where the climate is healthy
and invigorating, with a dry and tonic
atmosphere, will look about them, they
will see a greater or less number of their
friends and neighbors dying of con
sumption, while many others have
already been carried off by that dread
malady.
These deaths have occurred from time
io time ar,?!d the refreshing prairie
breezes of summer; in the fair and mel
low days of autumn, and also in the dry
and sunny seasons of a southern winter.
Such deaths amid such favorable sur
roundings afford positive and convinc
ing proof that climate alone will not
cure consumption; that neither pine
laden breezes nor bracing mountain air
will restore weak lungs or build tip a
constitution that is be5ng undermined
and broken down by the insidious germs
of a fatal disease.
But, on the other hand, many thouT
sands of testimonials from grateful peo
ple all over this country, who have been
cured by the Dr. Siocurn System of
Treatment, and are today in the enjoy
ment of perfectly restored health and
strength, afford the most convincing
evidence that this treatment, aided by
favorable climatic conditions and sur
roundings, is a positive cure for Con
sumption and all other chronic diseases
of the Throat, Chest and Lungs.
Therefore, those who go to the moun
tains, the seashore or to, southern cli
mates, as well as those who already
reside in such' favored localities, should
not fail to take the Dr. Slocum System
of Treatment if they wish to derive the
full benefits of favorable climatic condi
tions and scientific medication.
The Dr. Slocum System of Treatment
(consisting of Four Preparations) is both
medicine and food. The medicines used
in it allay the cough and lung irritation,
heal the soreness and subdue the pains
in the throat, overcome shortness of
breath, improve the appetite and diges
tion, and bring comfort, rest and re
freshing' sleep, while its food properties
are building up the constitution, enrich
ing; the blood and infusing the sufferer
with new life and vigor.
No single remedy will accomplish all
this, but the Four Remedies embodied
in the Dr. Slocum System of Treatment
will. More than a qnarter of a century
has been devoted to perfecting this
System of Treatment; every indication,
overy symptom in Consumption and
ther diseases of the Throat and Lungs,
