The Commonwealth. B. E. HILLIARD, - - - - Editor. Published Every Thursday. Entered at the Post-Office at Scotland Neck, N C .as Second Class Matter. THURSDAY, JANUARY 11, 19-0. A WORD TO THE FARMERS. It is generally ad-i-itled that all classes of people throughout the coun try are in better condition than they l. Kaa In unmet vA.irs. nnfl I hf nros iiaia iswu u"" v. j j a pects for the future are also bright r than usual. This is true of Scotland Neck and community as well as of other commu nities. It is peculiarly true ot our far mere, and it is to these The Com monwealth wishes to offer some sug gestions, y Id the first place, the situation de mands careful consideration ; for the farmers, having pulled themselves out " debt by dint ot energy and economy, and now occupying a position some what of independence, owe it to them- . selves and their own interests to inain- tain this position of independence. ' Any unwise move on their part might drop them back where they have been for several years ; and it is the impulse of .every, good citizen to hope and make effort that such shall not be the case. For, say what you jnay, t he farmers are ..and good times. Now, the question with the thought fuf firmer is, What shall I plant ? And just here the farmers will be in great .1 t I. n .V A mLIaTfA tills TfliU The Drice ot cotton has been so much better this season than usual and farm era have "come out," as they say, so mueh better than they anticipated, they are in danger of counting too ' much on one crop and thus overdo the matter in planting largely in cotton to the exclusion of other crops. The Commonwealth has all the while counseled the farmers to diversify their crops, and we believe that they will show great wisdom in doing so this year. From the good prices of cotton all over the country the tenden cy will be greatly to increase the acre age in cotton. This done by the farm ers throughout the South generally. and the. price of cotton will almost surely drop back much below what it has been this winter. " - By reason of the low prices of tobac- co there may be a tendency amongst the farmers to decrease the acreage, and this in turn will bring better prices - for tobacco by leason ot the reduction in its tobacco acreage. Also the good prices for peanuts may have a tendency to cause the fanners to increase that acreage, which again would have a tendency to bringdown the price. What we regard as the wise course for the farmers is, to pursue the even tan nr nf t.hnir war varMnir ror IiMlo -- j 7 - J ft i from what they did last year, giving the benefit of the doubt to clear indications as they now appear. And these indications are that cotton will probably fall a little in price for nest Mason and tobacco will brobably rise a lit.l. ........... ,;n I 1.1 . .perhaps. To sum up, we would counsel the farmers not to lose the use of their to bacco barns already built ; and if they j have not diversified their crops hereto fore, make a little experiment in to bacco in View of the chances for a little better prices, as we have tried to point out. As we have already said, the situa--ilon with the farmers is somewhat a 'critical one, and they would do well to weigh it carefully and not depend too mueh on any one crop. FREE BLOOD CURE. Unhealthy Kidneys Make Impure Blood. All the blood in your body passes through your kidneys oncoovery three minutes. 1 ne Kianeys are your blood purifiers, they fil ter out the waste or impurities in the blood. If they are sick or tut of order, they fail to do their work. Pains, aches and rheu matism come from ex cess of uric acid in the blood, due to neglected kidney trouble. Kidney trouble causes quick or unsteady heart beats, and makes one feel as though they had heart trouble, because the heart is over-working in pumping thick, kidney poisoned blood through veins and arteries. It used to be considered that only urinary troubles were to be traced to the kidneys, but now modern science proves that nearly all constitutional diseases have their begin ning in kidney trouble. If you are sick you can make no mistake by first doctoring your kidneys. The mild and the extraordinary effect of Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root, the great kidney remedy is soon realized. It stands the highest for its wonderful cures of the most distressing cases and is sold on its merits by all druggists in fifty cent and one-dollar siz es.
