Mr. Claude Kitchin, Halifax county's .vinniug candidate for Congress from this district, epoke in Rockingham laet week. He bad a great audience and made a great speech. The Rock ingham correspondent of the Chorlotte Observer wrote : "To-night the Rockingham boys, met Mr. Claude Kitchin, of Halifax county, at the train and escorted bun to the court nouse, where he spoke to a thousand or more people on the con stitutional amendment. Had it not been for the rain just before sundown twice that many people would have greeted Mr. Kitehin, for tbe Demo crats of Richmond and Scotland are full of zeal already. "Mr. Kitchin is making a very strong speech. He is one of the best young orators in the State. He speaks with force oa the poMtical issues ol the day. "Tonight he dwelt on the educa tional clause of the amendment aud scored the Republicans for claiming to be the friends of the poor white man. To prove that the Republican party is and has been the enemy of the poor white man he commented on an edi torial in The Washington Post, a Re publican organ, against the -amendment. The editorial appeared some time ago and it declared that the igno rant or poor negro was a better man and to be preferred to the ignorant, poor white man. Then, too, the record of the Republican party in North Car olina showed that nearly 2,0C0 poor white men had been turned out of office to give place to negroes. Ha further quoted lrom the Republican platform adopted at Raleigh : 'We denounce with indignation and abhor rence the Democratic proposition that the right to vote should be made de pendent upon heredity.' The infer ence is that the ignorant negro is as good as the illiterate white man. "The Populist party in demanding a change of the franchise laws of the State admits that the Democrats are riht and that there is danger of Leroism. The danger is so great that the I'opulist party calls for a change. It did not admit this danger in 1&92 and 18-), but after they turned the State oyer to the negro they now see it. "Mr. Kitchin declared that the danger-exists and asked what pr.rty should be looked to for a remedy ? "Concerning the clause requiring all children under 13 years of ago to learn to re-ad and write before IOCS he said : 'That is fhe best part of the amendment. The Democratic party comes to the poor white boy and Lolis out hope, shows him the responsibil ities of his people and promises to en able him to gratify his ambition. God made him better than the negro aud he must take advantake of his superior ity. Truly he is better by inheritance. "'The Republican party says that the poor white boy has no time for education, and tells him to stay in ig norance and be a slave. Tbat is the difference between the two parties.' "Mr. Kitchin's speech was well le ceived. Hs is a favorite with the peo ple of Ricnmond." Also a Rockingham correspondent wrote to the Raleigh News and Ob server of Mr. Kltchin's speech as fol lows : "The red shirts bloomed out in Rich mond county tonight. Young and old men in large numbers turned out en masse, arrayed in red shirts and astride red decked horses met Hon. Claude Kitchin, of Halifax county, at the depot here and escorted him through streets lined with red shirts to the court house where an immense gathering of the beautiful womanhood and the gallant manhood of Richmond county had assembled to hear him speak. It was a red-letter night in Rocking ham aud started the Sres of Democracy in Richmond and Scotland counties iLiit . ill not be quenched until after the election in. August. "Mr. Kitchin made a powerful speech and stirred his vast audience from beginning to end and after speak ing for two hours his audience would not let him stop, but kept him talk ing half an hour longer, and when he closed he received a urand oyation from the men and a . shower of beauti ful flowers. At the close ol Mr. Kitchin's speech the crowd would not retire until it had heard one of those rallying speeches for which Cameron Morrison, the young Democratic eader of Richmond, is famous." PRES. There is net a day that a conscien tious editor is not troubled about what to print and what not to print. He is a wise editor who prints all the news that is news, keeping always, in mind that the lesson taught by the current news is kept in tbe chaunel that makes for wholesomecess. The reader never knows how much scandal is suppressed by tbe editor who publishes oaiy what is so notorious or so wsll known that his subscribers have a right' to a correct statement of the facts. An editor fre quently has the experience related of Mr. Beecher in a recent issue of the Ladies' Home Journal. We quote : "In the egriy dajs of Mr. Beecher's career, when wit was unknown m the pulpit, some of the -deacons of his church asked him if he didn't think such frequent outbursts of humor weie calculated to diminish his usefulness. He listened patiently and when they finished he said : 'Brethren, if you only knew how many funny , things I keep in, you wouldn't complain about the few I 1st out.' " It the reader knew how much an editor suppresses, there would be . less criticism of what he prints. And in this connection it would not be amiss to refer to a striking- sermon preached in the First Baptist church, of Wiiiziingtoa, last Sunday by Rev. Dr. Calvin S. Blackwoil, tiom the text ' To the making of many books there is no end." His subject was 'The Mak ing of DooKs, Printers, Telegraphers and Newspaper Men." la the course of his remarks ho declared that "the1 printing office is a school, college aud university for the brightest intellects of oyery age," and added : "A newspaper oiiice is a scuool oi unselfishness. No other class serves a community so well and so often for so little pay, either m cash or appre ciation. Every day aud night the newspaper is doing free work for the beUeraiint of the community. II a lawyer was called upon by th3 city au thorities to do for the city the same auiout and no more valuable writing than that which every newspaper docs free every day the charge wouici be $50 or more. Ii the newspapers were to cease lor a week it would be as dark and ioucsoine as if the pall ol an eclipse covered us, and Wilmington would Le to the outside world practi cally as though she were not." Dr. Black. veil is right. The news paper ranks next to the pulpit and school as an educational and moral power. Conscious of this responsibili ty, makers of newspapers, as a rule, try to discharge it lor the benefit and up lifting oi their readers.' It too often happens, however, that the pulpit is in antagonism tj the press, aud the news paper is inuds a favorite subject for moralizing on the part ot the minister. But ii is gratiiyiug to had one here and there, iii;e Dr. Blackwell, who is disposed to gio credit where credit is due. 6 need net lose flesh in summer if you use the proper means to prevent ii.
