WHAT ABOUT ITt
The Commonwealth has cot heard
anything about the railroad recently
We feel like it is timo to stir up the
pure minds of the projectors of that
enterprise again.
Sometime ago we hoped that by this
time there would have been a way
blazed from Scotland Neck to Roanoke
river so that all who might pass could
read "railroad" on the trees.
But something seems to have put a
q uietus on the business, and now we
wish to hear about it again. Who can
cpsak about it with authority?
Let us hear about the project again
Nothing could be done which would
affect the business interests ot the town
more than the s lid railroad to Roanoke
river.
HARNETT COUNTY PEOPLE.
It may not be of special interest to
our readers generally, but Harnett be
ing the native county of the editor of
The Commonwealth, somehow we
feel a special pleasure in reprinting
the following from the editorial page
of the News and Observer about those
good people : .
"There is not a better type of the
best Democracy than is found in the
neighboring county of Harnett. It
was originally settled by the grand
army of Macs who came directly to
North Carolina from Scotland. Its
people may be depended upon to
stand true to their convictions, to de
fend Iheir homes in time of war, and
to stand firmly by their convictions in
times of peace. They are an rndepen-
dent people. They have studied
great public questions and are well in
formed, and they are ready to give a
reason for the faith that is in them."
END OF THE BOER WAR.
At last the Boer war is ended. So
the announcements say, and the civil
ized woild will be glad.
For more than a year and a half the
war has been continued at a fearful loss
of life both of the British and the
Boerd. The British have suffered worse,
considering their strength and their
number?, than the Boers. The British
loss has been estimated at 21,356, with
100,000 wounded besides prisoners.
The Boer3 have made a record for
bravery and heroism not outclassed by
any soldiery in the history of the world.
The terms of peace are briefly these :
"Boers must surrender and recognize
tbe king.
"The British agree to bring back the
Boer prisoners as speedily as possible
without loss of liberty or property.
"Breakers of the laws of warfare to
throw themselves on the king's mercy.
"Dutch to be taught in the schools
if desired by the parents and used in
the courts if necessary.
"Military punishment to end as
Boon as possible and self-government
to b9 substituted.
"No tax on the Transvaal to pay the
cost of war.
"Three million pounds to be provid
ed for stocking Boer farms.
"Cape Colony rebels to be subject to
trial and may be disfranchised for life,
but no death penalty is to be inflicted.
"Great Britain practically yields to
all the demands of the Boers except
absolute independence."
WAKE FOREST COMMENCE
MENT. The commencement at Wake Forest
last week was quite a pleasant occasion.
Everything passed off easily and well.
The board ot trustees took steps to en
large the work of the college by open
ing a medical department ; and other
infiuences weie set to work to increase
the usefulness of the institution.
The crowds were not particularly large
but every feature of the exercises was
pleasing, and all felt that the institu
tion had never had a rnrre pleant
commencement.

The Commonwealth has felt special
interest in the and success of
Hon. Claude Kitchin from the great
eouvention that nominated him in
tl -iM.-Wo two' ears ugo. He- made a
brilliant campaign, and his career in
Congress thus far has been highly com
mendable. The Warrenton Becord
makes this pleasing and .sensible ref
erence to Mr. Kitchin :
"Hon. Claude Kitchin will be renomi
oated for Congress from this District
without opposition. His first term in
Congress has pleased his constituents
highly. We want to congratulate him
in not having attempted to mike any
grand, eloquent speeches during thi
his first term.- If he can be kept in
Congress by bis frieuds and admirers
lor several terms he will undoubtly be
come one of tbe Democratic leaders in
tbe House of Representatives. He is
a young roan of great capacity, and
with this, Las great moral courage and
powers to discern between good and
bar1. Thesa virtues together with hie
love for bis countrymen and unques
tionable christian character fit him
well for the leadership of men."

FIRE IN ROCKY MOUNT.
There was quit3 a destructive fire in
Rocky Mount Monday night which
consumed four residences on Franklin
street. One building was occupied by
irof. C. W. Wilson, one by Mr. G. H.
uuuiel, one by Mr. Allen and the o'her
by Mr. Bolton.
The fire was caused by the explosion
of a lamp while occupants of the
building were away at church.
Prof. Wilson's many friends in Scot-
and Neck sympathize with him. Also
Mr. Daniel's friends here will sympa-
thiaa with him.
The losses wore partally covered by
insuranc?, but we have not learned the
exact amounts.
Uncle Sam's
Mail Service
requires physical and mental
ability of a high degree to
withstand its hard labors. The
high . tension to which the
nervous system is constantly
subjected, has a depressing ef
fect, and soon headache, back
ache, neuralgia, rheumatism,
sciatica, etc., develop in severe
form. Such was the case of
Mail Carrier S. F. Sweinhart,
of Huntsville, Ala., he says:
"An attack of pneumonia Left me
with muscular rheumatism, headache,
and pains that seemed to be all over
me. I was scarcely able to move for
about a month when I decided to give
M:;. Pato Pills
and Nerve Flasters a trial. In three
days I was again on my route and' in
two weeks 1 was free from pain and
gaining in flesh and strength.'1

HOUSEWORK
Too much housework wrecks wo
men's nerves. And the constant
care of children, day and night, is
often too trying for even a strong
woman. A haggard face tells the
storj of the overworked housewife
arid mother. Deranged menses,
leucorrhcca and falling of the
womb result from overwork.
Every housewife needs a remedy
to regulate her menses and to
keep her sensitive female organs
in perfect conditio!!;
i VJBHE" CARDUI
is doing this lor Uiousanus oi

Mrs. Jones and that is why she
writes this frank letter:

I am so glad that your Wiaa of Cardni

I have felt for years. I am doing my
own work without any help, and I
washed last week and was not one bit
tired. That shows that the Wine is
doing me good. I am getting fleshier
than I ever v.-cs bofore, and sleep good
ar.d eat hearty. Before I began taking
Wine of Cardui, 1 used to have to lay

now I do not tmnK or lying down t nrougn
