ier ,-' -' A The Commonwealth mr. walterj. smith married r hilT.iaRD. . . - - Editor. Published Every Thursday. Entered at the Post-Office at Scotland Keek, N C .an Second Clait Matter. THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 25 1902. SUSTAINED BY THE SUPREME COURT. It is understood that the Indepen dents in Littleton township areconcen t rating their BtreDgth against Mr. 3 W. Korthihgtou, amember of the pree eut board of Ealifax county eommiBsbners and one ol the nominees on the regular Dema cratic ticset for reelection. They hop to injure the regular Democratic ticket i! possible by defeating Mr. Northing ton. Their charge and grievance against Mr.Nortbmgtonis that be acted con trary to law in casting bis vote as i. member of the board of. commissioner last year against granting license tc sell liquor within a mile of Littleton Female College. An act was passed by the Legislature of 1897 making it unlawful to sell li quor witbin one mile of LUtletion Fe male College. Acting on this statute the count; commissioners refused to grant license to sell liquor in the town ol Littleton. The liquor men took the matter to the Superior courtjand lost their case. They took an appeal to the Suprem court and that court has sustained th ac.ion of ttie lower court. ' So the Independents now see tha, Don Quixote like, they are fighting : shadow and not a substance. " The bill creating the law was intn duced in the Legislature by a Republi can, passed by a Republican Legislt tare and is now sustained by a Repul lican Supreme court ; withal a goo thing throughout, and about the bt law we have ever known Republican.- to make. A college of three or four bundrec young: women was entitled to protec tion from the evil results of the liquo trafno near it, and the Legislature dit well in "passing the statute and th county commissioners did right in act ing upon it. Added to the strength o! the statute, the contention of Mess. W A. Dunn and Howard Alston, attorney against the license before the count; commissioners, was that because a ms jority of the citizens ol Littleton peti tioned against license it "ought not t bo granted. But the fact that the Supreme cou: t ha? sustained the whoe proceeding knocks to the winds the Independent?' charges against Mr. Nortbington. FORTUNE FAVORS A TEXAN. "Having distressing 'pains in head back and stomach, and being without appetite, I began to use Dr.' King' New Life Pills." writes W. P.
